Job Summary:
The Workers' Compensation Defense Legal Secretary supports in-house counsel in defending workers' compensation claims. This role plays a critical part in ensuring litigation workflows remain organized and compliant by managing legal filings, maintaining court calendars, and coordinating communication between claims examiners and the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB).
Key Responsibilities:
Expertly navigate the EAMS system for electronic filing of pleadings, motions, and petitions.
Proactively manage complex legal calendars including Mandatory Settlement Conferences (MSCs), trials, depositions, and lien conferences.
Draft and format legal documents such as Answers, Objections to PTP reports, Declarations of Readiness to Proceed (DORs), and trial exhibits.
Coordinate medical-legal activities including scheduling QMEs and AMEs and ensuring medical records are properly served and filed according to statutory timelines.
Act as a liaison between claims adjusters, opposing counsel, and the WCAB when needed.
Manage professional communication with internal and external associates.
Process inbound and outbound paper and electronic mail.
Provide administrative and litigation support as needed.
Required Experience:
Minimum 4+ years of Workers' Compensation defense experience.
Deep familiarity with California Workers’ Compensation laws and WCAB procedures.
Ability to manage a high-volume workload with minimal supervision.
Strong attention to detail and ability to meet strict legal deadlines.
Nice-to-Have Experience:
Experience supporting in-house counsel within insurance or legal organizations.
Familiarity with medical-legal case coordination and expert scheduling.
Experience supporting litigation teams handling complex workers' compensation matters.
