WNMS ED Assistant

The Emotional Disability (ED) Assistant provides targeted support to middle school students identified with emotional disabilities. Working under the guidance of certified special education teachers, this role focuses on implementing Behavioral Intervention Plans, assisting with classroom instruction, supporting social-emotional learning, and fostering a safe, structured learning environment that promotes academic and personal growth.

Key Responsibilities

• Academic & Classroom Support: Assist individual students or small groups with daily assignments, modifying instructions and tasks as directed by the lead teacher.
• Behavior Management & De-escalation: Implement individualized Behavior Intervention Plans, utilize non-violent de-escalation strategies, and support students during emotional dysregulation or crisis situations.
• Social-Emotional Guidance: Model, teach, and reinforce healthy coping mechanisms, self-regulation techniques, and social skills suitable for middle school adolescents.
• Progress Monitoring: Track daily student behavior, academic progress, and goal data to assist special education staff with documentation and IEP updates.
• Transitions & Inclusion: Accompany students during class transitions, electives, lunch, unstructured times, or general education settings to ensure safety and consistent support.
• Collaboration: Communicate regularly with teachers, school counselors, administrators, and support staff to evaluate student progress and adjust interventions as needed.

Qualifications

• Education: Associate's Degree, 60+ college credits, or ParaPro Certification preferred.
• Experience: Prior experience working with adolescents in an educational, behavioral health, or special education setting preferred.
• Skills: Strong communication, emotional regulation, patience, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to remain calm and composed during stressful or challenging situations.
• Training: Willingness to undergo training in safe physical intervention, non-violent crisis intervention (e.g., CPI), and trauma-informed practices.
