Description
Do you love the game of basketball and want to help others enjoy the game too? Want to positively influence children as they learn the game, develop their skills, practice good sportsmanship, and have fun? You can get back in the game by working as a basketball referee officiating youth (grades K-5) and teen (grades 6-8) basketball games in the Citys Winter Youth and Teen Sports Program.
We are looking for positive, responsible, and dependable individuals who can make sure the rules and spirit of the game are followed, encourage fair play with a focus on fun, and put the safety of all players and spectators first. You must be able to deal with participants, coaches, parents, and spectators in a positive, reassuring, courteous, and professional manner and are expected to provide a high level of customer service to recreation program participants. The Citys Sports Team is an innovative and collaborative group committed to encouraging exercise through competition, establishing life-long fundamentals of fairness, and promoting recreational opportunities and interests that contribute to the health and well-being of the Gaithersburg community.
Leagues play Friday nights (teens) and Saturdays (youth) beginning December 11, 2026. Staff must attend some preliminary meetings and trainings in December to review department policies and program expectations.
Hours per week will vary based on operational needs, but will generally not exceed an average of 6 to 12 hours per week. Starting hourly rate will be within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.
