About the City of Portland Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department:

The Portland Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Department is comprised of 160 full-time and over 250 seasonal staff dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Portland, Maine. They achieve this by operating cultural venues, running community programs (including Before and After School, Swim Lessons, and Senior Adult programs), and maintaining public buildings, waterfront infrastructure, 70 parks, 40+ miles of trails, 13 cemeteries, and 30 playgrounds. Their diverse team, including Park Maintainers, Lifeguards, Event Managers, Horticulturalists, and many others, works collaboratively to provide spaces and opportunities for social connection, recreation, and community development.

Job Summary:

The City of Portland Aquatics Division is offering a unique opportunity to make a difference in the Portland community as an On-Call Water Aerobics Instructor. Various shifts are available including mornings, days, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Aquatic Instructors are responsible for teaching various members of the community important learn to swim lessons and/or water aerobics classes. The ability to promote safety in and around the Portland pools is also desirable.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Promising candidates will have strong communication skills.
  • Ability to promote safety and work well in a team environment.
  • Prior experience working with preschool children and youth is desirable.
  • Must hold current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification and must attach copies of certifications to your application.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR/AED Certifications also preferred.

Expected Hours/Schedule:

Various shifts are available including mornings, days, afternoons, evenings and weekends.

Salary:

This is an on-call position, with a starting pay range of $19.00-$21.00 per hour, based on certifications.
