Waste Processing Specialist

The Waste Processing Specialist supports a variety of waste processing activities at the dynamic TMI-2 site including regulated compliance and augmented quality work, waste characterization, SNM-related support, and preparation of required documentation. This on-site position requires independent work in a changing industrial plant environment with required safety and radiological controls. The position reports to the Fuel and Waste Processing Director and supports operational, regulatory, project, and strategic objectives as assigned.

Job Description/Tasks/Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities

• Integrate into work plans and work packages waste requirements per waste processing procedures
• Provide hands-on waste processing oversight for radioactive liquids, solids, and chemical waste streams.
• Coordinating between LLRW and D&D to generate and implement treatment storage, disposal and waste packaging plans
• Coordinating between LLRW and D&D to ensure any blocking and bracing requirements are met for waste packages
• Conduct routine and campaign-based processing in accordance with approved operating procedures, ALARA principles, and radiological protection/safety protocols.
• Ensure processing activities support appropriate waste segregation, labeling, and packaging in accordance with approved waste profiles, DOT regulations, and disposal site-specific Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC).
• Assist in waste volume tracking, material characterization, and container tracking using site waste tracking systems or logs.
• Perform periodic inspections of in-process waste and storage containers.
• Perform operator-level inspections and minor maintenance on waste processing equipment; report malfunctions or anomalies to supervision.
• Assist in implementing corrective actions and performing readiness checks prior to and during processing campaigns.
• Backup to all SNMC scope requirements
  • Performing 10 CFR 74 required inventories of special nuclear material
  • Prepare / submit 10 CFR 74 required regulatory material balance and material transaction reporting per NMMSS (Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System)
  • Prepares/manages execution of nuclear fuel procedures:
  • Integrating SNM requirements (SNM tags, SNM storage areas) into work packages
  • Manages engineering assessment process to assign SNM values to pieces/components as they are removed from the plant
  • Oversees development of cut and package plans for SNM containing wastes
  • Develops approved storage container / approved storage area packages
• Develop canister content summary data packages which will contain all of the associated OQE associated with FBM canisters, including:
  • Fabrication / inspection records
  • Approving of loading procedures
  • Approving canister content (SNM and total activity)
  • Closure records (Welding, NDT, helium backfill)
• Ability to work independently and efficiently once aligned to objectives.
• Perform additional tasks and support activities as directed by the Fuel and Waste Processing Director to meet operational, regulatory, project, or strategic objectives.

Security and Compliance Responsibilities

• Follow all site procedures and applicable DOE, NRC, and DOT regulatory requirements during waste processing activities.
• Complete required records, logs, checklists, and batch documentation accurately and in real time.
• Assist in collecting data for waste manifests, shipment records, and quality assurance packages under the direction of waste program leads or engineers.
• Participate in internal audits, walkdowns, or inspections by providing accurate operational input and documentation.

Operational Interface Responsibilities

• Interface with technicians, radiation protection staff, engineers, and waste operations personnel to coordinate daily work and resolve emergent issues.
• Ensure process planning and execution reflect operational constraints and radiological safety conditions.

Training and Qualification Responsibilities

• Maintain qualifications and training required to perform assigned waste processing functions in accordance with site procedures.
• Provide task-level guidance and support to technicians or operators involved in waste processing activities, as appropriate.

Team Coordination and Communication

• Participate in pre-job briefs, post-job reviews, and shift turnovers to ensure safe, coordinated execution of processing tasks.
• Contribute input to procedure updates, process improvements, and lessons learned based on hands-on operational experience.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or high school graduate with 8 years experience or equivalent
• Track record of building and developing effective teams.
• Nuclear experience preferred, but not required.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Work Environment

• Full-time, on-site in Harrisburg, PA.
• Industrial plant environment requiring use of PPE.
• Standard Monday–Thursday schedule; occasional flexibility may be required.
• Limited travel may be required.

• Ability to effectively communicate; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location
• Ability to see close and distance and basic colors/shades
• Ability to work alone, interact with the public, and perform under deadline pressure
• Ability to work outdoor and indoor activities under various conditions
