A Day in the Life
Your morning starts with a startup checklist for a new VRF install in Orange County. By mid‑day, you’re on a rooftop, interpreting a wiring schematic and programming a touchscreen controller. You collaborate with the installing contractor to fine‑tune setpoints, document findings in a service report, then submit startup documentation for warranty registration before heading to your next site to troubleshoot a communications issue on a BMS network.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the on‑site startup technician for multiple manufacturers on commercial projects.
- Troubleshoot and validate control system installations on Daikin, AAON, and LG commercial HVAC systems.
- Apply strong reasoning and logic to isolate faults; coordinate directly with the original installers to resolve issues.
- Program new control systems using touchscreens and laptops; verify proper sequences of operation.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams and equipment manuals to expedite commissioning and repairs.
- Document actions, test results, and resolutions in detailed service reports; complete and submit all startup paperwork for warranty.
- Perform preventive maintenance, routine servicing, and repairs as needed.
- Perform other duties and assignments while maintaining regular, reliable attendance.
Knowledge & Abilities
- HVAC trade practices, industry standards, and refrigeration system theory.
- Materials, methods, and tools for installation, operation, and repair of commercial HVAC/R systems.
- Electrical theory as applied to common HVAC equipment and controls.
- Ability to read/interpret manuals and HVAC wiring schematics.
- Brazing and soldering techniques; applicable health and safety regulations.
- Basic record‑keeping and proper storage/handling of tools, materials, and supplies.
Advanced Technical Expertise
- LG and AAON commercial systems, and commercial package units.
- VRF systems with expert‑level understanding of refrigerant properties.
- HVAC controls systems and advanced troubleshooting.
- Automated temperature control systems; BMS communication systems and functionality.
- Modern, computer‑based HVAC platforms; proficiency with email, internet applications, basic office software, and computer networking.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Two years of HVAC training program.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid California License.
- Active EPA Universal Technician Certification.
Compensation & Benefits
$40–$65 per hour DOE. We offer excellent health benefits, a 401(k) plan, Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays, and flexible scheduling.
