VP of Finance

San Jose, CA | $200,000-$220,000 Base + 20–40% Bonus

About the Opportunity

We are conducting a confidential search for a Vice President of Finance to join a growing, project-based organization in the San Jose, CA market. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership opportunity for a finance executive who can serve as a true business partner to ownership while helping build the financial infrastructure needed to support the company’s next stage of growth.

This is not a traditional corporate finance role. The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating close to the business, understanding what is happening in the field and on individual projects, and translating that information into meaningful financial insight for ownership and leadership.

The Role

The VP of Finance will partner closely with the owner and executive leadership team to provide financial leadership across the organization. This individual will bring structure, visibility, and accountability to the company’s financial operations while remaining hands-on enough to understand the details behind the numbers.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Serve as a trusted financial partner to ownership and leadership, helping evaluate the financial implications of operational and strategic decisions.

  • Provide visibility into project profitability, job costing, cash flow, backlog, margins, and overall business performance.

  • Oversee and improve WIP and percentage-of-completion reporting, ensuring leadership has an accurate understanding of project financials.

  • Help clean up and strengthen the accounting function, including the P&L, chart of accounts, reporting structure, and financial processes.

  • Establish stronger financial reporting and analysis to help the organization understand what is driving profitability and where opportunities or risks exist.

  • Partner with operations and project leadership to evaluate individual jobs, contracts, costs, change orders, and project performance.

  • Build and improve processes, systems, and reporting as the organization grows.

  • Support automation and systems improvements that create greater efficiency, visibility, and scalability.

  • Assist ownership in evaluating growth opportunities, investments, and potential acquisitions.

  • Play an important role in M&A integration, financial diligence, and bringing acquired businesses into a consistent financial framework.

  • Build structure around the existing finance/accounting team while developing processes that can support the company’s anticipated growth.

  • Provide financial leadership in an environment that is entrepreneurial, fast-moving, and occasionally ambiguous.

Ideal Background

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on finance leader with strong accounting fundamentals and experience in a project-based environment.

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • 8+ years of progressive finance/accounting experience, with experience operating at a Controller, VP Finance, CFO, or similar level.

  • Strong understanding of WIP, percentage-of-completion, job costing, project accounting, and project profitability.

  • Experience cleaning up or strengthening accounting and financial reporting processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner directly with an owner, CEO, or executive leadership team.

  • Strong financial modeling, forecasting, budgeting, and business-driver analysis skills.

  • Experience improving financial systems, reporting, automation, and processes.

  • Exposure to M&A, acquisitions, or integration is highly valued.

  • A combination of strategic thinking and willingness to roll up their sleeves and get into the details.

  • The ability to operate effectively in a growing organization where not everything is perfectly defined.
