    Position Overview

    The Federal VMware Consultant will provide advanced administration, engineering, monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization support for enterprise VMware virtualization environments.

    The consultant will be responsible for maintaining VMware vSphere infrastructure, supporting virtual machines and clusters, managing storage and networking, implementing security and compliance requirements, and assisting with backup, disaster recovery, automation, and infrastructure optimization.

    Key Responsibilities

    VMware Infrastructure Administration

    • Deploy, configure, and maintain VMware vSphere environments.
    • Administer ESXi hosts, vCenter Server, virtual machines, and clusters.
    • Provision, configure, migrate, and decommission virtual machines.
    • Manage VMware features including vMotion, Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), and High Availability (HA).
    • Monitor availability, performance, capacity, and overall infrastructure health.
    • Troubleshoot VM performance issues, resource contention, host failures, and cluster-related problems.

    Storage & Virtual Networking

    • Manage VMware storage environments including:
      • VMFS
      • NFS
      • vSAN
    • Monitor storage availability, capacity, and performance.
    • Configure and maintain virtual networking components.
    • Manage vSwitches, distributed switches, port groups, VLANs, and related configurations.
    • Collaborate with storage and network teams to resolve infrastructure dependencies.

    Security & Compliance

    • Implement and maintain role-based access control (RBAC).
    • Ensure secure configurations for VMware hosts, virtual machines, and management systems.
    • Apply ESXi and vCenter security patches and updates.
    • Conduct vulnerability scans and coordinate remediation activities.
    • Participate in security audits, compliance reviews, and infrastructure assessments.
    • Maintain appropriate technical documentation for compliance requirements.

    Backup & Disaster Recovery

    • Manage VMware backup and replication solutions.
    • Support enterprise backup platforms such as Veeam and Commvault.
    • Configure and maintain VM backup policies and procedures.
    • Develop, document, and test disaster recovery procedures.
    • Participate in recovery exercises and validate system recoverability.
    • Monitor backup and replication health and troubleshoot failures.

    Monitoring & Troubleshooting

    • Monitor VMware environments using tools such as vRealize Operations / Aria Operations and vSphere Client.
    • Analyze logs, alerts, performance metrics, and system-health information.
    • Identify infrastructure issues proactively.
    • Provide Level 2 and Level 3 technical support for escalated incidents.
    • Participate in root-cause analysis and corrective-action activities.
    • Respond to critical incidents and participate in on-call support as required.

    Automation & Infrastructure Engineering

    • Use PowerCLI and other scripting technologies to automate VMware administration and reporting.
    • Develop automation for repetitive management and operational tasks.
    • Create and maintain infrastructure-as-code templates where applicable.
    • Automate monitoring, reporting, provisioning, and configuration activities.
    • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency through automation.

    Capacity & Performance Management

    • Monitor infrastructure utilization and resource consumption.
    • Analyze CPU, memory, storage, and network performance.
    • Forecast future capacity requirements.
    • Recommend infrastructure optimization and hardware upgrades where appropriate.
    • Provide performance-tuning recommendations based on operational data.

    Documentation & Collaboration

    • Maintain detailed documentation of the virtual infrastructure.
    • Create and update architecture diagrams, procedures, runbooks, and configuration documentation.
    • Generate and analyze reports covering system health, utilization, capacity, and performance.
    • Collaborate with application, storage, network, security, and infrastructure teams.
    • Ensure application and infrastructure requirements are aligned with VMware capabilities.

    Required Qualifications

    • Active Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility.
    • Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere environments.
    • Extensive experience with:
      • VMware ESXi
      • VMware vCenter Server
      • vMotion
      • DRS
      • HA
      • vSAN
    • Experience administering enterprise VMware infrastructure.
    • Strong knowledge of VMware storage and virtual networking.
    • Experience with VMware backup and replication technologies.
    • Experience troubleshooting complex virtualization environments.
    • Experience with PowerCLI or comparable scripting/automation tools.
    • Strong understanding of virtualization security and access controls.
    • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.
    • Ability to provide L2/L3 support and respond to critical infrastructure incidents.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with VMware vRealize Suite / Aria Operations.
    • Experience with Veeam, Commvault, or similar enterprise backup platforms.
    • Experience with infrastructure-as-code and configuration automation.
    • Knowledge of disaster recovery and business-continuity architectures.
    • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise or federal VMware environments.
    • Familiarity with vulnerability management and security-hardening processes.
    • Experience with capacity planning and performance optimization.
