The Vivarium Operations Technician supports daily vivarium operations by providing high-quality animal husbandry, ensuring animal welfare, and maintaining compliance with laboratory standards and procedures. This role focuses on the care, handling, and management of rodents in a modern laboratory environment, contributing to cell and gene therapy research in a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily animal husbandry tasks for study animals, including cage changes and routine care.
• Conduct daily checks on study animals to promote and monitor animal welfare, promptly reporting any concerns.
• Perform colony management tasks, including monitoring animal populations and maintaining accurate records.
• Oversee and perform routine maintenance of vivarium equipment and related systems.
• Receive rodents and ensure proper identification, housing, and documentation upon arrival.
• Assist in daily pest control checks to maintain a clean and compliant vivarium environment.
• Assist with the operation of cage wash systems, autoclaves, and laundry equipment to support facility sanitation.
• Evaluate and implement strategies to ensure operational compliance with internal and external standards.
• Perform additional related duties as required to support vivarium and laboratory operations.
• Adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and study protocols in all activities.
• Document all work with strict adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
• Humanely and confidently handle rodents, ensuring safe and ethical treatment at all times.

Essential Skills

• Prior mice handling experience is required, including humane handling and restraint techniques.
• Experience in laboratory animal handling and restraint techniques, particularly with rodents.
• Demonstrated ability to work holidays and weekends as needed to support animal care schedules.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team, demonstrating strong organizational skills.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
• Strong documentation skills with high attention to detail to support GLP and GDP requirements.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to follow verbal instructions accurately.
• Strong understanding of and ability to follow laboratory methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor's degree, preferably in a scientific field such as animal science, veterinary science, or a related discipline.
• Background or interest in animal husbandry, animal handling, animal science, animal health, vivarium operations, animal research, or veterinary-related work.
• Comfort working with rodents in a research setting and commitment to high standards of animal welfare.
• Ability to adapt to evolving processes and contribute to continuous improvement in a growing organization.

Work Environment

This position is based in a laboratory vivarium environment where most of the day is spent working directly with animals, including rodents, in a controlled research setting. The role involves regular interaction with cage wash equipment, autoclaves, and other laboratory and sanitation systems, as well as time spent at a desk for documentation and data entry. The facility is a brand-new, state-of-the-art site focused on cell and gene therapy manufacturing, offering a modern, technology-rich environment. The standard schedule is a first-shift role with a Sunday-Thursday workweek once training is complete. Initial training will follow a Monday-Friday schedule, with potential shadowing of weekend shifts to ensure proper onboarding. The position requires flexibility to work holidays and weekends to support continuous animal care needs.

This is a Contract position based out of New Albany, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
