Overview

A leading Florida engineering firm is seeking a senior-level Professional Engineer to lead and grow their Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering practice. This position is a key member of firm leadership and can be based in either the Tampa Bay or Miami office. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in mechanical engineering design, experience leading engineering teams, managing client relationships, and a proven ability to grow a practice through business development and client engagement. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection Engineering department
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering staff
  • Manage complex HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection design projects
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Participate in proposal development, project scoping, and business development activities
  • Identify opportunities for add-on business and long-term client growth
  • Review engineering designs, calculations, specifications, and technical documents
  • Support construction administration activities, including:
    • Reviewing submittals
    • Responding to RFIs
    • Performing construction observations
    • Preparing punch-list reports
  • Ensure projects meet quality standards, deadlines, and client expectations
  • Stay current with industry standards, codes, and emerging mechanical engineering trends

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Florida PE preferred
  • 10 years of mechanical engineering experience
  • Experience leading projects and mentoring engineering staff
  • Experience managing clients and developing business opportunities
  • Strong proposal writing and project scoping experience
  • Ability to lead and grow a mechanical engineering department
  • Strong entrepreneurial mindset and client-centric approach

Technical Experience Required

  • HVAC design experience, including:
    • Heat gain calculations
    • HVAC equipment selection and sizing
    • Mechanical equipment room layouts
    • Ductwork sizing and design
  • Plumbing design experience, including:
    • Domestic water service and distribution
    • Sanitary waste and vent piping design
  • Experience with mechanical utilities, including:
    • Chilled water systems
    • Compressed air systems
    • Natural gas systems
    • Plumbing systems
    • Fire protection systems
    • HVAC systems
    • Kitchen systems
    • Public assembly facilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fire protection design experience
  • Diesel, gasoline, and natural gas fuel system design experience
  • Experience with Revit
  • Healthcare project experience (preferred but not required)
  • Knowledge of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • ASHRAE standards
    • Florida Energy Code
    • NFPA standards
