Job Details

Job Details:

As a Consulting Veterinary Technician, you will be working under the supervision of the responsible veterinarian, providing basic veterinary assessment and care of rodents and other species. This role is crucial in facilitating the daily operations of the animal health and welfare, and research support programs of the Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC). You will be involved in various daily para-veterinary health care procedures and research services in the lab animal setting. This position requires a high degree of confidentiality and the ability to maintain it.

Responsibilities:

Your duties will include, but are not limited to, conducting animal health surveillance for rodents and other species as assigned, communicating lab and health information to researchers, supporting website function, understanding and participating in rodent sentinel health or similar programs, drafting SOP’s, providing training to Lab or LARC staff, understanding and performing necropsy techniques and other diagnostic or clinical diagnostic techniques, understanding and performing administrative tasks as needed by LARC and generally assisting LARC’s animal health and rodent health programs and supporting LARC veterinarians and UCSF research projects.

Qualifications:

Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree and have at least 5 years of experience. An RVT certification is a strong plus but not required. Experience running anesthesia would make someone a top candidate. You must have a willingness to work with rodents and potentially large animals, and flexibility to travel between Parnassus, Mission Bay, and other facilities using the UCSF shuttle. You should also have an interest in building a longer-term career with LARC.

You should have demonstrated ability to independently analyze lab reports, summarize findings and communicate results to veterinarians, researchers and others. Excellent organizational, computer and technical skills for database management, file maintenance, spreadsheets and word processing are required. You should be proficient in Microsoft word, Excel and Power Point and have strong written and verbal communications skills.

A valid California Driver’s license and participation in the California DMV’s Pull Notice System is required. You should have the ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surface for up to 7 hours/day. You should also have the ability to push and pull heavy objects and the ability to safely move and or lift heavy loads.

You should be comfortable performing tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, protective clothing and gloves, fume hoods, glove boxes, etc.

You should also either possess or have demonstrated aptitude for quickly obtaining a working knowledge of regulations and animal welfare requirements. Mandatory participation in the department’s occupational health monitoring program and pre-employment medical evaluation is required.
