Job Description:

In this role, you'll play an essential part in ensuring the health and well‑being of animals in our care. You'll support medical staff with examinations, treatments, diagnostic work, surgical preparation, and the daily husbandry needs of hospitalized animals. Starting Pay: $22.00 hourly

Work Location: St. Louis County Animal Care & Control - Baur Blvd

Hours/Schedule: 40‑hour work week; either four 10‑hour shifts or five 8‑hour shifts. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily animal care and husbandry in the veterinary suite or as assigned by the Medical Director.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Perform approved diagnostic procedures, including heartworm tests, fecal floats, giardia snaps, and parvo tests, and summarize results for the Medical Director.
  • Refill prescriptions following veterinarian‑approved protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records using the Chameleon system.
  • Support medical triage for sick or injured animals.
  • Assist with preparing animals for medical procedures, including surgery and euthanasia, and help prepare specimens for rabies testing.
  • Collaborate with the Inventory Manager to ensure medical supplies are stocked and available.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Medical Director, Veterinarian, or Clinic Office Manager.

Marginal Duties:

  • Assist with vaccination clinics and spay/neuter events.
  • Support special projects or tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Equivalent to one year of experience working with animals in a veterinary clinic, shelter, or similar environment.

Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education or training in a veterinary‑related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to safely restrain animals of varying sizes.
  • Comfort with cleaning, walking, feeding, and general animal care.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
  • Basic computer skills or ability to learn new systems.
  • Self‑motivation, reliability, and strong work ethic.

Pre-Employment Process Requirements:

Applicants will be evaluated based on relevant education, experience, responses to supplemental questions, and other work-related information provided on the application. Resumes are supplementary and do not replace the required application.

All candidates will receive notifications regarding application status once determined. Status updates are provided via email and can be found within each candidate's Workday profile.

Responses that qualified candidates provide to the application questions will count as 100% of their final evaluation score. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.  The five highest-ranking candidates will be referred to the Department Director/Appointing Authority for final selection.

Pre-Employment Screening:

Candidates extended a conditional offer must successfully complete all required pre‑employment screenings. These screenings include a drug test administered at no cost to the applicant by a certified laboratory and a background check evaluating the recency and relevance of the candidate's history to the position. Candidates must complete the drug test within 48 hours of receiving a conditional offer; failure to do so may result in withdrawal of the offer.
