    Job Summary

    Department-Specific Responsibilities

    • Schedules procedures, autoclaving tools.
    • Performs rodent and swine husbandry (rodent essential, swine optional).
    • Performs rodent and swine procedures, non-survival surgeries, and survival surgeries.
    • Performs intensive care monitoring.
    • Performs as a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) agent.
    • Manages of animal protocols.

    General Responsibilities

    • Monitors animals responses to anesthetics. Responds appropriately to anesthetic changes with appropriate knowledge of drugs and medical interventions.
    • Performs euthanasia to animals according to American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Guidelines, under the direction of a veterinarian and other regulations, policies, or guidelines, and monitors animals responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted.
    • Executes prompt examination of animals reported with health problems.
    • Adheres to all appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Research Compliance directives, accreditation standards, regulations, and laws.
    • Maintains accurate record keeping with electronic or paper medical records.
    • Develops excellent veterinary technician skills.
    • Maintains controlled substance inventory and related logbooks.

    Qualifications

    Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

    EDUCATION

    Required

    • Associates degree in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or related field.

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    Required

    • 1 year of animal care experience.

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

    Preferred

    • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) within 1 year of hire from date of hire.
    • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) upon date of hire.

    Working Conditions / Demands

    The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
