    Description

    Position: Veterinary Animal Care Specialist
    Department: Veterinary Clinic
    Reports to: Chief of Veterinary Medicine
    Hours: 40 hours per week; full-time
    Category: Non-exempt;  $17-18/hour, depending on experience

    Position Overview:
    This position is responsible for performing duties to ensure the cleanliness, physical and mental health of the vet clinic’s hospitalized patients.

    Daily Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Safely walk dogs that may be injured, or have recently had surgery or sedation.
    • Guide volunteers in assisting with care of hospitalized dogs
    • Medicate hospitalized dogs.
    • Maintain cleanliness of kennels, work area, laundry, and dishes.
    • Ensure safety of staff and the animals to avoid bites and injuries.
    • Minimize fear, anxiety, and stress in hospitalized dogs.

    • Demonstrated commitment to improve animal welfare.
    • Ability to work under pressure, and adapt and prioritize tasks.
    • Ability to accurately receive, report and record information.
    • Show initiative to develop skills.
    • Learn and follow all applicable laws and regulations.
    • Willingness to learn from and teach others to increase work efficiency.
    • Basic computer skills. Facebook, PetPoint and Slack are most frequently used. Google services (docs, sheets, etc.) and Microsoft office also used.

    Working Conditions:
    Ability to be on feet for up to 12 hours a day. Ability to kneel, squat or bend repeatedly throughout the workday. Ability to lift, carry and safely restrain up to 50 pounds. Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects.

    Qualifications/Educational Background:
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Dog handling experience preferred.
    • Shelter experience preferred.
