Our experienced, adaptable team works closely together and is committed to continuing to evolve our medicine, clinical standards, and hospital processes.
Companion is actively developing updated SOPs and working toward a Fear Free Certified team. The hospital also offers a unique connection to behavioral medicine and nearby rehabilitation services, creating an environment where an incoming Medical Director can have a meaningful influence on the future of the practice.
About You
As the Medical Director, you will serve as the clinical and cultural leader of the hospital, partnering closely with the Practice Manager and Thrive leadership to guide medical standards, support team development, and drive sustainable hospital performance. This role blends hands-on clinical practice with leadership responsibilities, allowing you to shape the future of the hospital while continuing to practice high-quality medicine.
Hours: Monday and Tuesday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The preferred doctor schedule is Tuesday through Friday, with flexibility for a three- or four-day workweek.
About the Role
As a key leader within the hospital, the Medical Director plays a critical role in setting the medical vision, maintaining standards of care, and cultivating an engaged and high-performing veterinary team. You will collaborate with hospital and regional leadership to implement best practices, support operational excellence, and ensure an exceptional patient and client experience. Your leadership will directly influence culture, medical quality, and team satisfaction.
Companion is particularly interested in a veterinarian who enjoys surgery and dentistry and can help strengthen and grow these services within the hospital. The practice is equipped with two anesthesia machines, three patient monitors, a high-speed dental unit, digital dental radiography, radiography, and a portable ultrasound unit.
The hospital also works alongside ROC Pet Rehab, located nearby, which provides rehabilitation services including an underwater treadmill and joint injection services. Companion’s current clinical team includes an experienced veterinarian focused on behavioral medicine, providing another distinctive component to the practice.

Living in Rochester and the Finger Lakes
Rochester offers an appealing combination of affordability, accessibility, and quality of life in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes region. The area offers four distinct seasons and easy access to lakes, trails, kayaking, museums, community events, and outdoor recreation.
Whether you prefer city living, established suburbs, lake communities, or more rural areas with acreage, the Rochester region provides a wide range of options, often within an easy commute of the hospital. The Finger Lakes, wineries, state parks, and numerous waterfront communities are close by, while Niagara Falls makes for an easy day or weekend trip.
For veterinarians considering relocation from larger Northeast markets, Rochester can offer significantly more room to live while maintaining access to the cultural, educational, healthcare, and recreational amenities of an established metropolitan area.
