Description/Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing preventive and routine maintenance tasks relating to the service and repairs of City vehicles, equipment, and hand-operated power tools.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assists in and performs routine preventative maintenance on City vehicles and equipment, including: tune-ups; oil and filter changes; frame and chassis lubes; reconditioning of electrical systems, spark plugs, distributors, condensers, points, and rotors; realigning and adjusting brakes; overhauling master and wheel cylinders; and rotating and balancing wheels
• Assists in the diagnosis and repair of City vehicles, equipment, and hand-operated power tools; assists in tearing down motors; assists in overhauling engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, and pumps; assists in removing, repairing, and installing external engine components, such as belts, alternators, water and power-steering pumps, radiators, and filters
• Transports City vehicles and equipment to and from outside contractors for servicing and repairs; coordinates delivery and pickup; performs routine vehicle maintenance, including fueling and washing
• Maintains shop and equipment to ensure a safe, clean, and organized work environment
• Assists with purchasing vehicle parts
• Assists with creating and maintaining vehicle maintenance records
• Establishes positive working relationships with City staff and the public
• Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Two years of experience in performing preventative and routine maintenance and repairs of vehicles and equipment, or related experience
• Possession of a valid Class C California driver license and a safe driving record
• Successful candidate will be required to provide and maintain their own set of tools to be used at work. The tools should include, but are not limited to, both standard and metric hand tools and pneumatic tools, with an inventory sufficient to complete daily tasks and work assignments. A toolbox (rolling preferred) is also required. The City will provide a locked cage to secure the toolbox when not in use.

Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge in the field of general vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, including the ability to perform routine preventative service, such as tune-ups; oil and filter changes; frame and chassis lubes; reconditioning of electrical systems, spark plugs, distributors, condensers, points, and rotors; realigning and adjusting brakes; overhauling master and wheel cylinders; and rotating and balancing wheels
• Knowledge of and the ability to assist in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles, equipment, and hand-operated power tools, including tearing down motors; overhauling engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators, and pumps; and removing, repairing, and installing external engine components, such as belts, alternators, water and power-steering pumps, radiators, and filters
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, be flexible to changing priorities, and meet time-sensitive deadlines
• Strong ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a cohesive team
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public
• Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical people
• Strong written communication skills and the ability to apply proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation when writing reports and memos
• Ability to maintain a good driving record and the ability to coordinate City vehicles for scheduled services
• Strong record-keeping skills and the ability to assist in creating and maintaining vehicle maintenance records
• Knowledge of safety practices and procedures and the ability to apply these while working in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and when working with chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards
• Ability to withstand exposure to solutions, chemicals, and airborne particles relating to a vehicle maintenance environment
• Ability to stand, walk, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis (approximately 66 percent of work time) and to bend, stoop, climb, kneel, and squat on an occasional basis (approximately 33 percent of work time)

These positions are covered by an existing collective bargaining agreement between the City of Santa Clarita and Service Employees International Union, Local 721, AFL-CIO. If selected for one of these positions, the employee will be bound by that agreement and may be responsible for paying applicable union dues. A copy of the Memorandum of Understanding will be provided upon hire.

Compensation includes enrollment in California Public Employees' Retirement System as a replacement for Social Security plus a competitive benefits package. All appointments are made at step 1 of the salary range unless otherwise authorized by the City Manager.
