    Description

    Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO)

    Position Summary

We are seeking a strategic, relationship-driven Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) to serve as a trusted technology advisor to our clients.

This role is not primarily focused on resolving tickets or selling technology. The vCIO builds meaningful executive relationships, understands each client's business, and translates organizational goals into a practical technology roadmap.

The successful candidate will guide clients through technology planning, budgeting, cybersecurity risk, operational improvement, and responsible AI adoption. They will help clients make informed decisions by connecting every meaningful technology recommendation to a business priority, measurable outcome, or identified risk.

    Key Responsibilities

    Executive Relationships and Strategic Leadership

    • Build trusted relationships with business owners, executives, and key stakeholders.
    • Learn each client's business model, growth plans, operational challenges, regulatory obligations, and tolerance for risk.
    • Lead strategic technology conversations in clear business language.
    • Serve as the primary executive-level liaison between the client and the MSP.
    • Establish a consistent communication cadence through executive check-ins, strategic business reviews, and annual planning sessions.
    • Strengthen client retention by delivering proactive guidance, transparency, and measurable value.
    • Navigate challenging conversations involving priorities, budgets, risk, accountability, and organizational change.

    Business and Technology Roadmaps

    • Translate the client's business roadmap into a multiyear technology strategy.
    • Identify how growth, acquisitions, new locations, staffing changes, remote work, compliance, and operational goals will affect technology requirements.
    • Develop and maintain prioritized 12-, 24-, and 36-month technology roadmaps.
    • Create annual technology budgets and forecast upcoming investments.
    • Connect recommendations to business outcomes such as productivity, scalability, security, resilience, profitability, and customer experience.
    • Identify dependencies, timing considerations, and organizational readiness before recommending new initiatives.
    • Regularly adjust the roadmap as the client's goals, risks, and operating environment change.
    • Prevent unexpected technology expenses through proactive lifecycle and budget planning.

    AI Strategy and Governance

    • Help clients identify practical AI use cases aligned with their business priorities.
    • Assess the organization's AI readiness, including data quality, security, processes, skills, and leadership support.
    • Develop responsible AI roadmaps that prioritize measurable value over unproven technology.
    • Establish AI governance standards covering acceptable use, data privacy, intellectual property, human oversight, accuracy, security, and regulatory concerns.
    • Help clients create and maintain formal AI acceptable-use policies.
    • Evaluate risks associated with public generative AI tools, shadow AI, automated decision-making, and sensitive data exposure.
    • Recommend approved tools, access controls, training requirements, and review processes.
    • Define success measures for AI initiatives, including productivity gains, cost savings, adoption, quality, and risk reduction.
    • Coordinate with technical and security teams to ensure AI solutions are implemented responsibly.

    Strategic Business Reviews

    • Lead engaging quarterly or strategic business reviews centered on the client's business—not a review of tickets and technical activity.
    • Report progress against the agreed-upon business and technology roadmap.
    • Discuss changes in the client's strategy, operations, risk profile, and priorities.
    • Present recommendations with clear business justification, investment requirements, risks, and expected outcomes.
    • Secure agreement on priorities, responsibilities, budgets, and next steps.
    • Document decisions and maintain accountability across the client and internal teams.

    Risk, Cybersecurity, and Business Continuity

    • Help clients understand cybersecurity and operational risk in business terms.
    • Align security recommendations with the organization's risk tolerance, regulatory requirements, cyber-insurance obligations, and contractual commitments.
    • Guide conversations involving disaster recovery, business continuity, incident preparedness, data governance, and third-party risk.
    • Partner with technical and security teams to prioritize remediation efforts.
    • Help executive stakeholders understand the potential financial and operational consequences of deferred action.
    • Maintain an appropriate balance between protection, productivity, usability, and cost.

    Internal Collaboration and Revenue Alignment

    • Collaborate with technical alignment, service delivery, projects, cybersecurity, and sales teams.
    • Convert strategic priorities into clearly defined technical initiatives and projects.
    • Ensure proposed solutions remain aligned with the client's roadmap, budget, and business objectives.
    • Identify opportunities for professional services, cybersecurity improvements, cloud modernization, automation, and lifecycle replacement.
    • Support accurate project scoping by clearly documenting the business need and intended outcome.
    • Participate in project planning and post-implementation reviews to confirm that expected value was delivered.
    • Advocate for the client internally while setting appropriate expectations regarding scope, cost, timing, and accountability.

    Measures of Success

Success in this role will be measured through:

    • Client retention and relationship health
    • Executive engagement and trust
    • Completion and quality of strategic business reviews
    • Percentage of clients with current business-aligned technology roadmaps
    • Roadmap and budget adoption
    • Reduction in unplanned technology expenses
    • Identification and conversion of appropriate strategic projects
    • Improvement in cybersecurity and operational risk posture
    • Successful adoption and governance of AI initiatives
    • Client satisfaction and documented business outcomes

    Qualifications

    • Five or more years of experience in vCIO, technology consulting, IT leadership, account management, customer success, or a similar strategic client-facing role.
    • Experience working with an MSP, MSSP, technology consulting firm, or multi-client service environment is strongly preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with owners and senior executives.
    • Experience developing technology roadmaps, strategic plans, and annual IT budgets.
    • Working knowledge of cybersecurity, cloud services, Microsoft 365, infrastructure lifecycle planning, business continuity, and compliance.
    • Practical understanding of generative AI, automation, data governance, and responsible AI adoption.
    • Ability to connect business objectives with appropriate technology investments.
    • Strong presentation, facilitation, negotiation, and written communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple client relationships, priorities, and strategic initiatives.
    • Financial and business acumen sufficient to discuss ROI, risk, budgeting, and operational impact.
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience supporting small and midsized businesses in regulated or security-conscious industries.
    • Familiarity with TruMethods or TruPeer frameworks, Technology Alignment Manager and vCIO role separation, and strategic business review practices.
    • Experience with mergers, acquisitions, business expansion, or organizational transformation.
    • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
    • Relevant certifications in technology, cybersecurity, governance, project management, or business leadership.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is naturally curious, consultative, and commercially aware. They ask thoughtful questions before recommending solutions and are comfortable discussing business strategy with an owner one moment and collaborating with technical teams the next.

They understand that a strong vCIO does more than recommend technology. A strong vCIO helps clients decide what to do, why it matters, when to invest, how to manage the risk, and how technology—including AI—can responsibly advance the business.
