The Varsity Basketball Coach leads the high school basketball program, responsible for developing player skills, designing game strategies, and fostering sportsmanship and academic success. Key duties include running practices, scouting opponents, managing game-day coaching, ensuring player safety, and mentoring student-athletes. They often manage program logistics and parent communication.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Team Development: Instruct players in fundamental skills, technical strategies, and physical training necessary for success.
- Game Management: Plan and execute daily practices and develop game plans for competitions.
- Leadership & Mentorship: Foster a positive culture, enforcing discipline, sportsmanship, and character development.
- Academic Oversight: Monitor the academic progress of team members to ensure compliance with school standards.
- Administration: Manage team budgets, inventory equipment, schedule, and coordinate logistics, such as travel.
- Safety & Compliance: Oversee student safety at all times and abide by school, league, and association rules (e.g., state athletic association).
- Communication: Act as the primary contact for parents, school administration, and community stakeholders.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience: Previous coaching experience, usually at the high school or college level, is required, with demonstrated success in developing players.
- Knowledge: Deep understanding of basketball rules, techniques, and modern strategies.
- Certification: Valid coaching certification, first aid, and CPR certification, along with safety training such as concussion management, are typically required.
- Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, along with the ability to work under pressure.
Physical Requirements:
- Coaches may need to stand for long periods (up to 2 hours), lift up to 50 pounds, and demonstrate drills, requiring agility and physical fitness.
Other Duties:
- Coaches are required to assist in the following: hiring/managing assistant coaches, conducting off-season workouts, and hosting youth camps.
- Assist Athletic Director on schedules and transportation.
- Work with teachers and staff on academic progress of players
