The Tesla Energy Device Software team is looking for a Software Engineer to design and maintain the internal tooling and simulation infrastructure that lets residential energy firmware teams move faster with higher confidence. You will work across Powerwall, Backup Gateway, Wall Connector, and related home energy products-building Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) environments that approach real-world behavior, and the visualization and debugging tools that make complex multi-process systems understandable.
Device software is only as good as the feedback loop around it. Our goal is tooling that shortens the path from idea to validated behavior: high-fidelity SIL, field-trace capture and replay, rich reports and dashboards, control-flow and system visibility, and extensible instrumentation (traces, hooks, probes). As products, revisions, capabilities, and regional variants grow-including market-specific configurations such as external companion hardware-you will regularly extend the platform so new and existing products can be brought into the same validation and debugging workflow.
Design, implement, and maintain internal SIL, harness, and developer tooling (primarily Python and Go) that improves correctness, debuggability, and release confidence for residential energy device software
Build and evolve close-to-real-life SIL environments for multi-process embedded Linux systems; close gaps between simulation and field behavior where they matter most
Develop visualization and debugging tools-including report generation, SIL-driven dashboards, control-flow visualization, and related analysis views-so engineers can understand system behavior without spelunking logs alone
Implement and support trace/hook/instrumentation systems that reach into device software (Go, Rust, C/C++); enable capture of traces in the field and faithful replay in SIL
Onboard new products, product revisions, capabilities, and regional or market-specific configurations (e.g. installations that require additional external hardware) into shared tooling and SIL workflows
Collaborate with Product, Device Software, Hardware, and Validation to turn team pain points into clear tool designs, tests, and shippable internal platforms
Improve reliability and usability of tooling used daily by engineers; reduce time-to-root-cause for lab, SIL, and field issues
Contribute to automated tests, CI integration, and engineering practices that raise product reliability, developer productivity, and release confidence
Support production and fleet needs where tooling helps: bring-up, field anomaly reproduction, and continuous improvement after launch
Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in an extremely fast-paced, collaborative environment
Experience building internal developer, validation, or simulation tooling that other engineers rely on day to day
Proficiency in languages used for tooling and integration-Python, Go; Rust, C, or C++ experience is a plus for working close to device software and multi-process systems
Comfort working across the boundary between tools and the systems under test: embedded or device software, multi-process Linux, IPC, logs, and traces
Real-world experience in one or more of: Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), simulation harnesses, or high-fidelity test environments for embedded or multi-process systems; Debug, visualization, or observability tooling (dashboards, report generators, timeline/control-flow views, or similar); Trace, instrumentation, capture/replay, or hook-based systems for reproducing field or lab scenarios offline; Extending test or simulation platforms to support new products, hardware variants, or regional configurations
Strong software fundamentals: clear interfaces, maintainability, failure handling, and testability-tooling is product software for internal users
Experience with unit / integration automation, CI pipelines, or HIL-style validation adjacent to SIL is a plus
Experience with Docker and QEMU (or similar container and machine emulation tooling) is a plus for packaging, isolation, and realistic SIL environments
Exposure to complex embedded Linux systems, home energy / battery / inverter products, multi-device site setups, or market-specific product variants is a plus
