The Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) Transmission Line Engineer is responsible for conducting rigorous quality assurance and quality control reviews of high-voltage overhead electric transmission line models, design packages, and foundation documents. The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in the PLS-CADD software suite and geotechnical/structural foundation software, including Fadtools MFAD and Ensoft L-Pile, ensuring all civil and structural deliverables comply with client criteria, utility standards, and industry safety codes prior to external submittal.
Key Responsibilities
- Model and Data Review: Perform exhaustive technical reviews of PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and TOWER models to verify terrain data, design criteria, sag-tension calculations, and clearance tables.
- Quality Control Audits: Validate structure loading, span lengths, wind/ice criteria, and foundation interaction inputs against project specifications. Experience developing QA/QC programs (criteria, checklists, etc.) is preferred.
- Design Package Verification: Review complete construction packages?including plan and profile drawings, structure assembly drawings, hardware lists, and stringing charts?for constructability, accuracy, and completeness.
- Perform PLS-CADD and project design tasks as needed to support overall project portfolio
- Standards Enforcement: Establish, update, and enforce internal QA/QC procedures, checklists, and workflows aligned with evolving utility best practices.
- Mentorship & Collaboration: Interface directly with project managers, lead design engineers, and client stakeholders, providing technical guidance and training to junior staff on modeling accuracy via collaborative virtual or in-person environments.
- Non-Conformance Tracking: Document design discrepancies, issue structural/model correction notices, and track resolutions prior to final design sign-off.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Experience: 6+ years of progressive experience in high-voltage overhead electric transmission line design (69kV to 500kV+) with a dedicated focus on engineering quality control.
- Software Mastery: Advanced proficiency in PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE/TOWER, with a strong grasp of criteria file setup and optimization.
- Foundation Design: Demonstrated experience designing and reviewing direct embedment, drilled piers foundations utilizing Fadtools MFAD (moment foundation analysis) and/or Ensoft L-Pile (lateral load p-y analysis) software packages.
- Code Knowledge: Thorough comprehension of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and relevant ASCE/IEEE standards.
- Certification: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license preferred (or the immediate capability to obtain licensure via comity).
