The Role:

The Utility Operator is a critical role to overall plant operations. This individual is responsible for assisting the Production Manager taking full responsibility of a shift in terms of management of staff, management of production and quality targets and to ensure the smooth running of the production processes. The Utility Operator assist with the daily activities of the Production Team to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency while developing a team environment. This individual ensures product quality by utilizing methods to control production processes. The Utility Operator provides for a safe work environment through proper training and communications.

  • Stringent enforcement of Safety Rules and Procedures
  • Regular performance of safety audits for all areas of control
  • Assist with ensuring all associates receive required safety training and attend scheduled safety meetings
  • Serving as a member of the Emergency Response Team with training required in the following: Emergency Response , First Aid/CPR/BBP, Fire Extinguisher

Assume responsibility for various personnel tasks with regards to team members for the following:

  • Assist with scheduling FTE for department responsibilities and shift.
  • Assist with new hire training for good manufacturing practices, quality standards and machine operations.
  • Provides an atmosphere that fosters open, honest communication within team, with other teams and across departments.

Motivates team members to produce products that meet or exceeds customer expectations by:

  • Maintaining a culture of continuous improvement, quality, high performance and process excellence.
  • Using sound statistical methods.
  • Assist manager with team members having appropriate training and coaching in statistical methods.
  • Monitoring quality and make recommendations on when to stop production based on material being out of specification.
  • Assisting operators and coordinate trouble-shooting activities.

Motivates team members to perform at or above expected levels of productivity by:

  • Assist with problem solving efforts of the team.
  • Working with Maintenance and Management to establish operational “Best Practices”
  • Providing coaching and feedback to team members.
  • Assist with root cause analysis sessions, Kaizen events and other improvement strategies

Assist with the accurate completion of all paperwork including but not limited to production and downtime reports and incident reports.
Work closely with other Shift Utility Operators to ensure production handovers are effective communications tools.
Partner with all departments to identify and address process improvement opportunities to eliminate waste, enhance safety, reduce cost, increase capacity and productivity and improve the end product

 

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write, and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Self-Starter with little supervision.
  • Mechanical aptitude – have demonstrated and understanding of machine logic and the ability to troubleshoot equipment successfully.
  • Capable of lifting up to 75 lbs.
  • Basic computer functions.
  • Understanding of lock-out/tag-out procedures: ZES, IES, etc.
  • Ability to operate a fork lift in a safe manner.
  • Ability to analyze and document SOPs.
