Job Description

The Utility Inspector plays a key role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of water mains and other utility-related infrastructure. This position focuses on inspecting assets in the field, documenting conditions and deficiencies, coordinating construction-related services, and preparing accurate technical documentation. Responsibilities

• Inspect water mains and other utility-related infrastructure to verify structural soundness, safety, and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
• Document inspection results thoroughly, including deterioration, structural condition, differences between design and actual construction, and any required sampling.
• Oversee and coordinate construction-related services on assigned projects to ensure work aligns with design specifications and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct on-site investigations and gather relevant data, including maps, reports, test results, drawings, and other documentation as needed.
• Review technical data and project information to identify issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement in infrastructure performance and safety.
• Prepare and deliver technical files and documentation in accordance with established guidelines, regulations, and internal standards.
• Use inspection-related tools, equipment, tablets, mobile applications, or reporting software to capture and report field observations accurately.
• Interact professionally with clients and internal teams, serving as a client-facing representative during inspections and project activities.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to communicate findings, clarify requirements, and support project decision-making.
• Maintain compliance with all applicable safety procedures and regulatory guidelines while performing field inspections.
• Participate in training and apply learned methods, tools, and standards to improve inspection quality and consistency.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated technical aptitude and ability to work confidently with inspection-related tools and equipment.
• Ability to work independently in the field while managing time and tasks effectively.
• Basic proficiency with tablets, mobile applications, or reporting software used for data collection and documentation.
• Comfortable in a client-facing role, with the ability to represent the organization professionally on site.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interface effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Field inspection experience or exposure to utility or infrastructure environments.
• Attention to detail and ability to document conditions and discrepancies accurately.
• Ability to interpret maps, reports, tests, drawings, and other technical documentation.

Work Environment

This role is a full-time position at 40 hours per week, working Monday through Friday in a fully remote-from-the-field capacity. Utility Inspectors perform their duties in the field, traveling between sites using their personal vehicle and receiving mileage reimbursement at the current GSA rate. The position involves regular use of inspection tools, equipment, tablets, mobile applications, and reporting software to capture and transmit data. Training is provided for all necessary tools, processes, and technical standards. The organization offers a trusted, established infrastructure consulting environment with over 75 years of experience and an end-to-end project delivery model, along with standard holiday pay and one week of paid time off.

This position will start at $25/hr. Given the size and resources of the company, there is virtually unlimited room for growth.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
