The purpose of this position is to provide customer service to callers and visitors to the department. This is accomplished by greeting customers; answering questions and assisting; researching information; completing forms; taking payments for services; entering payments; processing monies for deposit; and completing related clerical tasks. Additional duties may include working with utility readings to provide accurate usage and documentation regarding charges; reviewing and analyzing billing reports; assisting with reporting processes; submitting work orders to review unusual usage or revenue; reviewing and taking action on exception reports; identifying meters for re-read; and reviewing disconnect information; processing documents; opening and distributing mail; contacting customers; filing; and referring customers to other departments

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service to the public by greeting visitors and responding to requests; providing directions; researching general information; receiving payments; and researching accounts.
  • Processes payments by entering information and data; calculating bills; posting transactions; verifying monies received; balancing funds; and preparing bank deposits.
  • Assists callers and visitors by answering the phone; taking messages; and referring callers to the appropriate individuals or department.
  • Submits work orders for investigation by reviewing reports for unusual usage; reviewing revenue trends; analyzing meter reports; assisting with preparation of regular reports; ensuring reporting accuracy; printing reports for review; and discussing with technicians.
  • Identifies inactive accounts by reviewing account status information; and submitting work orders for disconnection.
  • Completes the billing review process by searching for high and low usage; identifying meters for re-read, printing exception reports, entering technician readings.
  • Maintains documentation by processing information, filing and storing data.

Qualifications

  • High School graduation or equivalent
  • One year of experience as a clerk or cashier
  • One year of experience in administrative support

Supplemental Information

  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials
  • Ability to count monies and process payments
  • Ability to analyze documents and reports
  • Skill in the operation of 10 key by touch
  • Skill in the operation and use of standard office software which includes databases and presentation programs, along with Microsoft products

Employees can receive a monthly additional pay for Associates, Bachelors, Masters and PHD degrees.

Employee participates at 7.65% contribution with matching city funds.

Texas Municipal Retirement System

Employees participate in a statewide retirement program at 7% contribution with a city match of 2:1.

Five years vesting, 20 years retirement at any age.

Vacation

Non-civil service employees accrue 6.67 hours per month (2 weeks per year).

All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All Fire employees accrue 15 hours per month (7.5 - 24 hour shifts a year).

Sick Leave

Non-civil service employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All Fire employees accrue 15 hours per month (7.5 - 24 hour shifts a year).

Holidays

Non-civil service employees receive 13 paid holidays per year including one personal or "floating" day.

Longevity Pay

Earned at a rate of $4 per month.

This is calculated on number of years of service up to and including 25 years (maximum $1200).

Workers Compensation

Workers compensation coverage is provided for all employees.

Fire/Police

Eligible for Education/Certification pay.

Deferred Compensation Plans- Mass Mutual/Empower

Payroll deduction for employee participation. City does not contribute.
