In this skilled position, you'll work with treatment facilities, pump stations, mechanical and electrical equipment, and monitoring systems to help keep critical Utilities operations running safely and efficiently.
What You'll Do
- Inspect, operate, troubleshoot, maintain, install, and repair process equipment at water and wastewater treatment facilities and integral pump stations.
- Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance, while maintaining accurate records, logs, and routine reports.
- Monitor flow, pressure, levels, sensing and trending equipment, evaluate operating conditions, and make routine adjustments, repairs, or replacements as needed.
- Use sound judgment to identify unusual conditions, take appropriate corrective action, and report concerns and corrections.
- Monitor and maintain electrical equipment in and around treatment facilities and pump stations.
- Perform mechanical adjustments to valves and equipment and respond to mechanical concerns identified by the Chief Plant Operator.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and maintenance vehicles.
- Participate in emergency response and scheduled on-call programs to help keep essential services operating when our community needs them most.
- Follow established safety practices, including the proper use of respiratory protection and other required PPE.
- Provide exceptional customer assistance, using effective communication, problem-solving, and complaint resolution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
- Knowledge in the repair of electrical and mechanical systems in the utility service area.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the workplace.
- Skill in the proper use and operation of tools and machinery used in job tasks.
- Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
- Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
- Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
- Ability to be medically able to wear a respirator as determined by the OSHA Respiratory Medical Evaluation process.
- Ability to maintain compliance with established county procedures in relation to respiratory protection.
- Ability to input information into a personal computer.
- Ability to complete light metal fabrication and repairs using torches and welding equipment.
- Ability to operate cranes and rigging equipment for the removal and installation of process equipment.
- Ability to recognize issues related to vibration and alignment for pumps and motors.
- Ability to use sound judgment in detecting unusual conditions, or recommending repair scheduling.
- Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, and blueprints in performance of job duties.
- Ability to respond in a professional manner to complaints or inquiries from a variety of sources.
- Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives under general supervision.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
- Ability to perform routine functions without referral to supervisor.

Education & Credentials That Power This Role
Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience in public works construction, maintenance, wastewater collection, water distribution, repair activities.
Licenses and/or Certificates:
- Must maintain a valid Commercial Driver's license Class "A" or ability to acquire permit within 30 days of hire and ability to acquire license within three (3) months of hire.
- Within one (1) year of position assignment:
- Must maintain CCU Confined Space Entry Certification
- Within two (2) years of position assignment:
- Must maintain Water Distribution Operator Level 3 License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights, and/or dust.

The position requires moderate exposure or risk related to physical and/or mental health and safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, electricity, high system process pressures, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).
