General Statement of Job

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of skilled duties required in the operation, installation, and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Work involves the excavation, repair/replacement, and installation of water/wastewater mains and service lines, manhole construction, repairing malfunctioning water/wastewater meters, adjustment of valves to proper grade, repairing/installing asphalt and concrete, servicing fire hydrants, and installing water/sewer service connections. Employee must exercise initiative and some independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy and firmness when in contact with customers and the general public. These positions are essential. Personnel occupying these positions may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general county offices are closed. Applicants must be available to work Sunday through Saturday as needed.

A criterion is specifically detailed for FC Worker I, FC Worker II and FC Worker III. In order to move up the worker must meet/or exceed the responsibilities set in the criteria of the higher worker position. Field Crew Worker III is the highest position.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responds to calls regarding leaks, system pressures, water quality; breaks in water or wastewater lines, repairs leaks and inspects lines for defects.
  • Responds to after-hour emergency calls when problem arise.
  • Participates in the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater lines and associated fixtures, including irrigation systems.
  • Operates lawn mowers, tractors, steam and high pressure washers, and a variety of power tools.
  • Assists with building, grounds and other maintenance tasks to include: cleaning and maintaining work areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Conducts vehicle inventory.
  • Aids higher level Utilities Field Crew Workers in making water and wastewater connections.
  • Performs tasks in a safe manner, comprehending safety regulations and contributing to a safe working environment.
  • Operates backhoe and trenching machine, as needed.
  • Attends meetings and seminars on safety and work related matters.
  • Assists in maintaining pump stations
  • Assists with CCTV line monitoring program.
  • Assists with jet truck operations.
  • Assists with annual distribution flushing program.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent and zero (0) months to one (1) year of experience in water and sewer line installation and repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Virginia Class A Commercial Drivers License obtained within six months of employment, Tanker Endorsement preferred.

DOT Medical card required.

Tanker Endorsement required.

Valid VDOT Flagging Certification, Class B Backhoe certification or certifications must be obtained within six months of initial employment.

Valid Adult CPR/AED Certification card and First Aid Certification within one (1) year of employment.

Attendance of OSHA required annual training is a condition of continued employment; must conform to OSHA regulations that may require removal of some facial hair and obtain a baseline hearing test.
