    About the Role
    Uber's Global Network Infrastructure team is hiring an Optical Network Engineer to support the availability, performance, and scalability of Uber's optical network across metropolitan areas in the USA. The role covers day-to-day operation, oncall support, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Uber's optical transport infrastructure, which underpins the production datacenter, backbone, and cloud interconnect network.

    The Uber Platform Engineering organization builds and manages the compute, storage and network infrastructure that supports Uber's workloads globally. Within Platform Engineering, the Global Network Infrastructure team is looking for an optical network transport engineer who will help deliver our next-generation network solutions that increase the efficiency, reliability, performance and agility of Uber s global platform.

    Key Responsibilities
    - Monitor and maintain optical network availability and performance across metro sites in the USA
    - Operate and troubleshoot OTN/DWDM equipment (line systems, transponders, ZR optics) from vendors such as Infinera/Nokia, Ciena, or ADVA/Adtran
    - Participate in oncall rotation; triage and resolve incidents, escalating to internal teams or 3rd party vendors as needed
    - Coordinate with remote hands, carriers, and vendors to execute fiber and hardware work in lights-out facilities
    - Support capacity planning and scalability of the optical network to meet growing platform demand
    - Collaborate with engineering teams across timezones on network design and deployment
    - Evaluate new optical technologies and support their integration into production networks
    - Provision and maintain device configurations per established change management processes
    Basic Qualifications
    - 3+ years of hands-on experience with major OTN devices, such as Infinera/Nokia, Ciena, or ADVA/Adtran
    - Knowledge of optical transport, system design, device delivery, and operations, including troubleshooting and incident management
    - Experience participating in on-call schedules as an escalation point for service-related issues
    - Experience working in a lights-out environment or interfacing with remote hands, vendors, and a globally distributed team
    Preferred Qualifications
    - Experience provisioning network device configurations for major OTN vendors and hardware
    - Experience supporting large-scale green or brownfield architecture, design, and deployment for global or national enterprise or Service Provider backbone or data center network fabrics
    - Experience driving operational excellence through change management, outage mitigation, and blameless post-mortem processes
    - Experience with TCP/IP and familiarity with Linux-based environments.
