Job Summary

To provide a combination of secretarial, computer data entry, reception, and clerical duties at the direction of the Administrative Nurse Manager or Designee.

Responsibilities

  1. Transcription of Physicians Orders and computer skills

    • Criteria A: Transcribes Physicians Orders in an accurate and timely manner according to Norwalk Hospitals Policies and Procedures.
    • Criteria B: Initiates or updates appropriate patient information in the Chart Review Conservation of the computer system where appropriate.
    • Criteria C: Notifies appropriate personnel of STAT orders.
    • Criteria D: Calls department for facilitation of transcribed orders when appropriate.

    • Record Maintenance

      • Criteria A: Prepares, maintains, and forwards records in an accurate and timely manner.
      • Criteria B: Replenishes and reviews records on a daily basis according to unit procedures.
      • Criteria C: Prepares records for admission, transfer, surgery, procedures, discharge, and expiration.
      • Criteria D: Processes discharge records according to standard chart order.

      • Communication

        • Criteria A: Communicates effectively and courteously with patients, visitors, and coworkers within the scope of his/her responsibilities.
        • Criteria B: Uses a Windows-based computer system competently.
        • Criteria C: Assists the RN in care delivery by providing accurate and timely processing of communications.

        • Occupational and Personal Responsibilities

          • Criteria A: Demonstrates compliance with identified policies and procedures in carrying out unit assignments.
          • Criteria B: Demonstrates willingness to assist with and improve unit operations.
          • Criteria C: Maintains neat and orderly appearance and environment.

          • Equipment and Supplies

            • Criteria A: Monitors orders and oversees maintenance of equipment and supplies in a proper, orderly, and cost-effective manner.
            • Criteria B: Enters and renews chargeable items/services into the computer system for patient care correctly.
            • Criteria C: Contacts appropriate departments as directed by Manager/designee for needed services on the nursing unit.

              • Criteria A: Receives patient posting and assists in room assignments as necessary.
              • Criteria B: Updates and maintains Unit Secretary Worksheets where appropriate.
              • Criteria C: Assists in QA studies as assigned by the Nurse Manager/designee.
              • Criteria D: Maintains and updates telephone listings.

              • Unit Rounds

                • Criteria A: Checks all patients line of vision and/or identification bands and bed tags per unit standards.
                • Criteria B: Sorts and delivers patient mail when received.
                • Criteria C: Respects patients privacy.

                • Performs other duties as assigned.
                • Other Information

                  • Required: High School Graduate or equivalent.
                  • Preferred: Previous secretarial/computer experience with a Windows-based computer system.
                  • Hospital or other healthcare setting experience.
                  • Minimum Experience: zero to six months.
                  • Desired:
                  • Manual significant manual skills, motor coordination, and finger dexterity.
                  • Occupational significant occupational risk.
                  • Physical effort: Medium to Heavy effort. May exert up to 35 lbs. force.
                  • Physical environment: Significant exposure to dirt, odors, noise, human waste, etc.
