    Description

    Responsible for providing clerical support to patient care unit following departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

    • Provides general clerical support to the unit, such as reception, data entry and retrieval; maintaining supply inventory; and assembling, maintaining, and distributing various types of information.

    • Transcribes physician orders and notifies appropriate parties of orders and consultations.

    • Schedules procedures and patient/resident transportation to procedure site.

    • Participates in orientation of new staff.

    • Responds to phone calls and requests for information in an accurate, efficient manner.

    • Responds to patient/resident call lights and informs appropriate staff of requests.

    • Maintains current, accurate orders, records and other documentation related to the work.

    • Maintains the workstation in a clean, orderly, and well-stocked condition.

    • Accurately performs basic mathematical calculations.

    • Enhances individual and unit professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, in-service meetings, workshops, and by reading current literature concerning scope of practice.

    • Maintains medical record in orderly fashion with documents placed under appropriate chart dividers.

    • Performs other related responsibilities as necessary.

    Required:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Successful completion of a health unit coordinator course, or high school or college coursework in medical terminology and computer/data entry.

    Preferred:

    • Six months of clerical experience in a health care setting.
    • Computer keyboard skills and windows application experience.
