Job Summary
As the Laborer, you will support telecommunications and underground utility construction activities by performing a variety of manual labor, equipment operation, material handling, and jobsite preparation tasks. You will work closely with operators, foremen, and construction crews to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with customer and company requirements.
This is a traveling position that includes per diem and full benefits. Training is provided, making this an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in building a career in the construction and telecommunications industry.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to)
- Attend and participate in morning and afternoon job-specific safety meetings and huddles as required.
- Operate various tamping machines and small equipment in accordance with specifications and safety procedures.
- Inspect machines and equipment and assist with routine maintenance.
- Load and unload materials and equipment at jobsites.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Inspect and safely operate hand tools for various construction activities.
- Assist equipment operators with excavation, trenching, shoring, and backfilling activities.
- Place conduit in open trenches and assist with conduit proofing.
- Perform potholing to identify existing utilities.
- Assist with setting structures and related construction activities.
- Assist with forming and pouring concrete.
- Assist with asphalt preparation and placement.
- Maintain the safety and proper utilization of company vehicles and equipment.
- Ensure work activities comply with customer requirements and project specifications.
- Follow and promote company safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in required and random drug screenings.
- Report injuries, accidents, hazards, and unsafe conditions to the Foreman.
- Assist crew members in maintaining a clean and organized jobsite at the end of each shift.
- Perform additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs.
Required Qualifications
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Reliable transportation to assigned jobsites.
- Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.
Experience
- Construction or underground utility experience preferred but not required.
- Previous experience operating small equipment and hand tools is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under the direction of Foremen, Operators, and other construction leaders.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with crew members, leadership, customers, and other stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and policies.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew.
- Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to perform a variety of manual construction tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors and in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to identify and report unsafe conditions and follow appropriate safety procedures.
- Ability to travel extensively and work at various project locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in underground utility or telecommunications construction.
- Experience operating small construction equipment.
- Experience using hand tools and construction equipment.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment.
- Willingness to provide suggestions and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying and unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of personnel, vehicles, and heavy equipment in active construction environments.
- Excellent vision or the ability to perform required duties with prescription lenses.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools and construction equipment.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and other applicable PPE.
- Ability to travel and work at remote or changing jobsite locations.
