Turbomachinery Electrical Wiring & Instrumentation Technician

What a day looks like

You’ll turn complex wiring diagrams into working systems on compressor and turbine product lines. From fabricating conduit and installing switches and signals to mounting electrical and performance instrumentation, you’ll bring each unit to life. You’ll also assemble and test electrical power cables, system electrical feedthroughs, power cable support assemblies, and Vibration Monitoring System (VMS) bulkheads before final shipment.

What you’ll handle

• Receive instructions and work direction from supervision and review wiring diagrams and work orders.
• Analyze drawings and wiring diagrams to determine materials, assembly specifications, and methods; create sketches when drawings are unavailable.
• Plan work procedures; identify and stage required tools, test equipment, and materials.
• Fabricate parts using shop machines and hand tools; form and install conduit using precise measuring and bending methods.
• Install conduit, switches, signals, and wiring per drawings, bills of material, and short forms across all product lines.
• Install electrical and mechanical instrumentation used to test compressors and turbines.
• Assemble and test electrical power cables, electrical power feedthroughs, VMS feedthroughs and bulkheads, and power cable support assemblies.
• Perform troubleshooting by checking resistance and voltages to verify the integrity of connections.
• Wire compressors and turbines for final shipment.
• Assist Instrumentation Specialists and perform shaft surface micropeening for vibration analysis.
• Operate overhead and jib cranes; drive a forklift truck and other material handling equipment.
• Perform stud welding; operate a portable welder as needed.
• Use a computer to access drawings, email, and specialized software for testing and wiring tasks.
• Report job identification data and time spent to the foreman; maintain a daily log of accomplishments, issues, and corrections.
• Maintain housekeeping standards: wipe down and keep machines, tools, and work areas clean; store tools, materials, and equipment properly.
• Observe all safety rules; report hazardous conditions and defective materials/equipment immediately.

Test and inspection procedures

• AC and DC hipot testing on electrical components (e.g., power cables and feedthroughs) up to 30 kV for 60 seconds.
• DC megger testing on electrical components up to 10 kV for 60 seconds.
• Helium leak checks on components such as VMS feedthroughs and ammonia pump flex conduits, up to 100 PSIG with 5 minutes of continuous monitoring.

Tools and equipment you’ll operate

• Test equipment and instruments for checkout work, hipot and megger testers, helium leak detector, and Worksaver.
• Power hand tools and grinders, drill press, soldering equipment, miscellaneous small machines and hand tools.
• Conduit benders, pipe threading machines.
• Motor generator and stud welding gun, portable welder.
• Overhead cranes, jib cranes, forklift truck, and other material handling equipment.

Materials you’ll work with

• Relay and control equipment, switches, and panel boards.
• Insulation materials, wire and cable hardware, solder.
• Conduit piping, steel supports, joint sealing compounds, electrical epoxy.
• Electrical power cables, electrical power feedthroughs, VMS feedthroughs and bulkheads.

Qualifications and schedule

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability and willingness to work 1st (7am–3pm), 2nd (3pm–11pm), and 3rd (11pm–7pm) shifts; shifts are not guaranteed.
• Ability and willingness to work overtime, weekends, and holidays.

You’re fluent in

• Electrical schematics and blueprint reading.
• Soldering and high-voltage systems.
• Conduit pulling and mechanical assembly.
• Shop math for precise layouts and measurements.

Machines & technologies you’ll use

• Digital Low Resistance Ohm Meter (DLRO) (Megger).
• Calipers and micrometers.
