Trim Engineer

Position Summary

The Trim Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of Performance Seats soft trim products and supports engineering trim programs from concept through production. This role works closely with OEM design studios, engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to ensure trim designs meet styling, performance, quality, cost, and production requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead or support soft trim product and program execution to meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

• Manage trim product data, including program IDs, sewing components, materials, BOMs, and color matrices.

• Develop and maintain trim patterns using Optitex PDS or equivalent patterning software, including marker creation.

• Collaborate with OEM design studios to ensure seating design and styling themes are achieved.

• Support foam A-surface development, seat styling, comfort, and overall design requirements.

• Review design inputs, drawings, and specifications to ensure project requirements and deliverables are met.

• Create and maintain DFMEA, DVP&R, APQP/PAP documentation, and other required engineering documentation.

• Develop and maintain sewing specifications, appearance standards, and trim construction guidelines.

• Create and release trim cover drawings and develop paper and digital patterns.

• Apply automotive cut-and-sew construction techniques, including material selection, lamination, retainers, and attachment strategies.

• Develop prototype and production BOMs, tooling requirements, material usage, and scrap-rate estimates.

• Support sewing process development, manufacturing feasibility, production launches, supplier training, and audits.

• Support prototype builds, seat measurements, fitments, benchmarking, teardowns, and testing.

• Assist with initial costing, quoting, project timing, and engineering deliverables.

• Support troubleshooting, complaint resolution, and 8D investigations.

• Support embroidery and logo development as required.

• Manage soft trim development materials, inventory, tools, and sample shop requirements.

• Maintain current technical knowledge and support continuous improvement initiatives.

• Follow all Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality, ISO/TS 16949, and ISO 14000 requirements.

Key Qualifications

• Experience in automotive seating soft trim engineering, design, and development.

• Strong knowledge of automotive cut-and-sew construction techniques.

• Experience with Optitex PDS or equivalent patterning and marker creation software.

• Experience with Trim Product Data Management (TPDM) or equivalent systems.

• Knowledge of trim BOMs, color matrices, sewing specifications, appearance standards, and material selection.

• Experience creating and maintaining DFMEA, DVP&R, APQP/PAP, and related engineering documentation.

• Knowledge of foam A-surface development, seat styling, comfort, and fitment requirements.

• Understanding of manufacturing feasibility, sewing processes, tooling, and supplier requirements.

• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and regulatory standards.

• Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

• Ability to support customer and OEM requirements in a fast-paced engineering environment.
