Job Summary

The Traveling Field Engineer provides technical and engineering support for large-scale data center and low-voltage infrastructure projects across multiple job sites. This role is responsible for supporting field operations through system testing, troubleshooting, documentation management, quality verification, and engineering coordination. The Traveling Field Engineer serves as a technical resource for field teams, project leadership, estimating, and quality departments while ensuring installations meet project specifications, quality standards, and client requirements. This position requires extensive travel and the ability to work independently in fast-paced construction environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day engineering support for field operations and report project progress to field engineering leadership.

  • Manage testing activities, test result documentation, and labeling processes throughout project execution.

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose low-voltage, structured cabling, and fiber optic system issues.

  • Perform field verification of installations, connections, labeling, system functionality, and workmanship quality.

  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and project documentation to ensure accurate field implementation.

  • Review and compile test results for client turnover and project closeout documentation.

  • Conduct detailed site walks to evaluate project opportunities, change orders, and constructability requirements.

  • Prepare written scope narratives, system outlines, and field assessment reports to support estimating and pre-construction activities.

  • Identify and document existing site conditions, infrastructure constraints, and access limitations.

  • Coordinate with subcontractors during pre-construction activities, including site walks, scope reviews, and bid collection.

  • Serve as a technical liaison between field operations, estimating, quality, and project leadership teams.

  • Support project startup, commissioning, documentation control, and closeout activities.

  • Assist with product demonstrations and technical presentations when required.

  • Provide guidance to field leaders on project setup, workflow planning, documentation organization, and best practices.

  • Support the development and implementation of quality standards, training materials, and job readiness procedures.

  • Assist with punch list completion, quality inspections, and corrective action efforts.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support project success.

Job Requirements

  • FE I: Minimum 2-4 years of commercial low-voltage or structured cabling experience, preferably within new construction data center environments.

  • FE II: Minimum 4-6 years of commercial low-voltage or structured cabling experience, preferably within new construction data center environments.

  • Experience supporting large-scale commercial construction or mission-critical infrastructure projects.

  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, construction documents, and quality requirements.

  • Experience troubleshooting low-voltage, fiber optic, and structured cabling systems.

  • Experience using fiber optic testing equipment and interpreting test results.

  • Ability to compile and present testing documentation for client review and project closeout.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across field and office teams.

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, Bluebeam, and enterprise project management software.

  • Experience with Procore and Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms is preferred.

  • Ability to travel extensively and work at various project locations throughout the United States.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.

  • Ability to work in active construction environments and job site trailers.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 2-6 years of commercial low-voltage, structured cabling, fiber optic, or data center construction experience, depending on level.

  • Hyperscale data center experience strongly preferred.

  • Colocation data center and new construction experience preferred.

  • Experience supporting mission-critical infrastructure projects is highly desirable.

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)

  • Travel position supporting large-scale data center construction projects.

  • Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with flexibility based on project requirements.

  • Employees generally return home approximately every four weeks.

  • Projects are located at various domestic construction sites and may require extended travel assignments.

  • Work is performed primarily in active construction environments, data centers, and project field offices.
