The unit specializes in endoscopy/GI procedures. There are three procedure bays operational within the unit. An estimated 15 to 30 procedures are performed each day. Certifications required include BLS and ACLS, as well as a procedural sedation competency test. GI certification is preferred for GI tech positions. The electronic medical record system utilized is Cerner. The charge nurse role is filled by a supervisor. Weekend requirements include being on call only. Holiday requirements also include being on call only. Call times during the week are from 1530 to 0700, with 24-hour call coverage required on weekends. Call is self-assigned by techs and is evenly split among the staff in the unit. Scrub colors for the position are provided. Clientists or intensivists are available in-house after hours. Respiratory therapy services are available 24/7. Pharmacy services are also available 24/7. Shifts are Monday through Friday with eight hour shifts starting between 07:00 and 10:00, depending on the case schedule. There is no floating to other units. Floor specific orientation lasts for a week or until the staff member feels comfortable. Common procedures include ERCP, EGD, PEGs, and all scoping procedures. There may be instances where the technician will go to the operating room for a GI procedure. Some bronchial procedures are performed with respiratory therapy support. The cancellation policy allows for the hospital to cancel up to four shifts during a 13-week assignment. The charting system in use is Cerner. A BSN is not required for this position. The position operates within an acute care setting.
