This role involves assisting the surgeon with instrumentation for a variety of complex procedures. Under some supervision, the technologist prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during surgical procedures. Responsibilities include passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performing scrub duties as directed. The technologist provides surgical support to physicians and patients undergoing surgical procedures in all surgical areas, including some complex cases. They anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment in a timely manner. Adherence to all policies and practices for the safe identification and handling of specimens and medications is crucial. The technologist possesses knowledge of medications and their intended use in the surgical field, as well as awareness of patients' weight and maximum medication doses when appropriate. Handling specimens and medications must be conducted using correct technique according to departmental policy and procedure. They provide information related to the care and preparation of surgical instruments and equipment for sterilization and disinfection procedures. Necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments, and sponges must be performed with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision. Preparing the surgical field involves opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for scheduled cases. The technologist ensures all materials are available and in working order and verifies their skills in using equipment correctly. Indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation and assisting with standard work and cleaning post-procedure are also part of the role. The technologist maintains aseptic technique and actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches. Immediate communication and correction of any breaks in aseptic technique are essential. Ensuring that equipment is functioning properly is part of the responsibility, as is notifying appropriate personnel of any problems. Testing equipment is required before use in the surgical field. Adherence to unit policies regarding equipment maintenance is necessary. The technologist assists with restraining uncooperative or combative patients in a safe manner. They serve as a role model for Surgical Tech I, providing leadership and influence to others. Skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and fostering effective working relationships are required. Knowledge of normal/abnormal anatomy and physiology, along with the ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions, is essential. Communication skills, both written and verbal, must be effective and appropriate for the job.
