Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Surgical Technologist, which may include a combination of Surgical Technician experience or Surgical Extern experience.
License: Certification as a Surgical Technologist.
Certifications: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS).
Must-Have: Required skills in sterile environment maintenance, surgical case scrubbing, resource utilization, surgeon preference list application, and instrument tracking scanning system.
Description:
As a member of the healthcare team, collaborate with the surgical team to provide care for patients, ensuring that patient goals are met.
Follow the standards of practice set forth by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) and hospital policy.
Demonstrate critical thinking skills by problem-solving and anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical procedure.
Create and maintain a sterile environment.
Monitor for breaks in sterility and initiate corrective actions when necessary.
Independently scrub cases at an expert proficiency for specialty and/or generalist case mix.
Utilize appropriate resources and contribute to providing service that is safe, effective, and fiscally responsible.
Apply surgeons' preference lists to determine instruments, supplies, and equipment for procedures.
Use standardized set-ups when applicable.
Send surgeons' preference changes to the Service Coordinator for the maintenance of cards.
Participate in ongoing initiatives that promote increased safety and effectiveness in the surgical environment.
Advocate for patients while in the intraoperative environment.
Use preferred instrument tracking scanning systems consistently, scanning all instruments per department expectations when applicable.
Employ excellent surgical technique and assist with setting up the room, including opening supplies and patient positioning.
Act as a resource for all surgical personnel.
Be independent in all on-call cases in the assigned specialty and/or generalist case mix if on-call is a requirement for the role.
Ensure instrumentation is sterile for use by inspecting sterilization indicators, parameters, and measures.
Inspect and properly prepare surgical instruments for sterilization and/or storage.
Escalate repair issues to appropriate personnel.
Demonstrate superior knowledge and expert practice in advanced surgical procedures.
Seek knowledge and competence that reflects current professional practice and promotes critical thinking.
Participate in ongoing educational activities and share findings with peers and the team.
Contribute to a work environment conducive to the education of healthcare professionals and assist educators with evaluating the competency levels of new staff.
Seek clinical experiences that promote an increase in knowledge for self and others.
Maintain updated knowledge of the location of supplies and equipment within the department and assist with their appropriate utilization.
Complete delegated tasks from ST Coordinator/ST Educator or PDC for the teaching of the ST student and orientation of new employees within the teaching guidelines of the department.
Participate in preceptor classes and maintain yearly preceptor competency.
Develop effective communication strategies and collaborate with individuals and departments in the conduct of professional practice.
Demonstrate flexibility concerning the surgical schedule to support patient care needs.
Maintain and practice Surgical Technology with dignity and respect to the highest standards of professional conduct and patient care.
Exhibit team-building ability and share knowledge and expertise to encourage all students and new staff to become integral parts of the surgical team.
Demonstrate knowledge of departmental fiscal responsibilities.
Support and participate in departmental cost-saving initiatives and identify opportunities for cost savings.
