The Surgical Technologist facilitates physician performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. This role includes handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures. Quality patient care is ensured during operative procedures by constantly monitoring the maintenance of the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist verifies surgeries to be performed with consent forms and brings patients to the assigned operating room. Instruments are passed to the surgeon during procedures while anticipating the need for additional supplies. Counts are performed with the circulator prior to the operation and before incision closure. Preparation of sterile dressings and securing dressings after incision closure is essential. Supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures must be checked and obtained. Setting up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions is required. Assistance in draping the sterile field and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization is expected. This role also assists other team members with room cleaning for turnover and prepping for the next patient. Additional job-related duties may be assigned as needed. All associates are required to receive all necessary vaccinations as a condition of employment, with medical and religious exemptions applying. Participation in an employment verification program is acknowledged by candidates. Total bed count includes 3 operating rooms and 1 endoscopy room. Staffing ratios during the day are 1:4, with night and weekend teams scheduled for 1:1 call. Types of procedures include joints, general surgery, gynecology, urology, ENT, podiatry, and endoscopy. Training is provided, but past experience is helpful for all staff. On-call duty is required, with a minimum of 1 night per week and 1 weekend per month. Shifts consist of 4 days of 9-hour shifts, totaling 36 hours per week. Support services include pharmacy and phlebotomy, with transportation assistance available. Provider coverage is maintained by hospitalists.
