The Scrub Technician demonstrates an ability to work with medical, nursing, and ancillary services to provide safe patient care. The individual demonstrates a professional, courteous manner and handles confidential information with discretion for the patient and their family. The Scrub Technician demonstrates the ability to clean instruments and ensure sterility is achieved by utilizing appropriate procedures. The individual recognizes successful completion of steam autoclave and automated high-level disinfectant units. The Scrub Technician selects equipment and supplies in an organized manner, based on surgical procedure. Competence in preparing instrument sets according to preference lists, patient history, and age is essential. Utilization of supplies cost-effectively is required. The individual demonstrates the ability to handle and operate sophisticated equipment. The Scrub Technician detects and readily adapts to changes in surgical procedures. Creation and maintenance of a sterile field is required. Aseptic technique must be maintained at all times in accordance with established standards. The individual demonstrates the ability to open and handle sterile supplies, proper surgical hand scrubbing, donning sterile gown and gloves, setting up a sterile field, receiving sterile supplies, and assisting in proper draping of the patient. Corrective measures must be initiated when a break in sterile technique occurs. The Scrub Technician demonstrates the ability to work with medical and nursing staff in providing safe patient care. Care with sharps to prevent injury or contamination is essential. Compliance with policies and procedures for counts and maintaining an adequate count of all countable items on the sterile field is required. Proper protocol must be initiated when counts are incorrect. The individual accurately draws up medication with proper labeling of all solutions and syringes. Serving as a preceptor and mentor to new employees is expected. Assessment of the surgical environment for safety, cleanliness, and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards is required. Support of a state of continual service readiness is necessary. Ensuring a clean, safe, and orderly work and care environment is essential.
