Surgical Technologist First Assistant

We are looking for an experienced Surgical Technologist First Assistant to join a busy operating room team. This position will work closely with surgeons and nurses to prepare for and assist with complex surgical procedures while maintaining a safe and sterile environment. The ideal candidate should be comfortable working across multiple specialties and have strong first-assist and robotic experience.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the scrub person and first assist during operative and invasive procedures.
  • Prepare the OR, including instruments, supplies, equipment, and specialty items based on surgeon preference.
  • Maintain a sterile field and follow proper aseptic technique throughout procedures.
  • Perform surgical counts with the circulating RN.
  • Assist with sterile draping, surgical skin prep, clipping, and catheter placement as needed.
  • Provide instruments and supplies to the surgical team and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
  • Assist with surgical wound closure and cutting sutures under provider supervision.
  • Assist with laparoscopic, robotic, and other minimally invasive procedures.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and specialized equipment.
  • Assist with patient safety, specimen collection, implants, drains, and other intraoperative needs.
  • Assist with room turnover, instrument management, and inventory.
  • Monitor instrument sets and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Update physician preference cards based on OR needs.
  • Assist with training, precepting, and providing clinical instruction to staff and students.
  • Participate in quality improvement, education, and competency programs.
  • Perform designated circulator duties as delegated by the RN.
  • Participate in scheduled call coverage and maintain flexibility with scheduling needs.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience.
  • At least 2 years of Surgical First Assist experience preferred/required for this assignment.
  • Associate degree, vocational certification, or military certificate in Surgical Technology.
  • Current CST, TS-C, or NCCT certification.
  • CSA or CFA certification required for this assignment.
  • BLS certification.
  • VA license required.
  • Additional BSMH/VA credentialing will be required.
  • Strong experience across multiple surgical specialties.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced OR environment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Da Vinci robotic surgery experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with multiple major service lines.
  • Travel experience is not required.
  • Flexible schedule availability preferred.

Surgical Specialties:
The OR includes 11 surgical suites with a broad range of procedures, including:

  • Robotics
  • Spine
  • Orthopedics
  • Laparoscopic
  • General Surgery
  • GYN
  • Urology
  • Vascular

Candidates should be strong in most of these specialties and comfortable adapting to different types of cases.

Schedule:

  • Day shift: 6:45 AM–5:15 PM
  • Call: approximately 6–8 call shifts per 6-week period
  • Flexible scheduling preferred

  • Second interview conducted by the Unit Leader

The strongest candidate will be an experienced Surgical First Assistant with a strong background across multiple OR specialties. Da Vinci robotic experience is a major plus, along with strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, minimally invasive procedures, and complex cases. The candidate should be flexible, confident working alongside surgeons, and comfortable taking on both scrub and first-assist responsibilities.
