Job Summary:
Step Down Unit Nursing Specialist for a metropolitan area. This role involves providing care to adult and geriatric patients with complex medical and socio-economic backgrounds in a fast-paced environment. The position requires a versatile and experienced RN capable of managing multiple co-morbidities and rapid patient transfers, with a focus on respiratory management and telemetry monitoring.

Job Details:

• Schedule: Rotating shift; 12-hour shifts; minimum of 36 hours per week.
• Required Qualifications: California Registered Nurse license; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS); minimum of 2 years of telemetry nursing experience; certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Palliative and Hospice Care Nursing (PCCN); experience managing arterial lines, chest tubes, respiratory equipment, and cardiac drips; ability to manage complex patients with multiple co-morbidities; proficiency with Epic electronic charting system; ability to float to other UCSF campuses; current references must be in hand at time of submission.
• Preferred Qualifications: ACLS certification; Palliative and Hospice Care Nursing (PCCN).
• Float: Float rotation may be required to other UCSF healthcare facilities within a 75-mile radius.
• Additional Information: Daily census approximately 30 patients; high acuity with frequent transfers to ICU and Rapid Response Teams involvement; respiratory heavy with trach suctioning and high-flow nasal cannula care; frequent off-unit procedures and imaging. Unit supports interdisciplinary teams including IV, Respiratory, Phlebotomy, Radiology, Social Services, and Pharmacy. Patient population includes adults and geriatrics with diagnoses such as end-stage renal and liver disease, sepsis, pneumonia, and infectious diseases. The environment is fast-paced with interventions every 15 to 30 minutes, sometimes more frequently.
