Position Summary

The Speech Language Pathologist provides assessment and treatment for patients with communication and swallowing difficulties at the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP). Working within a secure psychiatric hospital, this clinician collaborates with the treatment team to support patient safety, functional communication, and participation in care.

The ideal candidate is compassionate, adaptable, and comfortable supporting individuals with complex psychiatric, cognitive, and medical needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Evaluate speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing abilities.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans with measurable goals.
  • Provide therapy to improve functional communication and swallowing safety.
  • Teach compensatory strategies and recommend communication supports.
  • Recommend appropriate food textures, liquid consistencies, and swallowing precautions in coordination with the care team.
  • Review orders and medical records to guide treatment.
  • Educate patients, staff, and caregivers on communication strategies and safe swallowing practices.
  • Collaborate with medical, nursing, rehabilitation, dietary, and mental health staff.
  • Monitor progress and adjust treatment based on patient response.
  • Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation.
  • Follow hospital safety, security, confidentiality, and infection prevention procedures.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited program.
  • Active Colorado Speech Language Pathology certification.
  • Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
  • Two years of relevant professional experience preferred.
  • Experience with communication and swallowing disorders.
  • Psychiatric or inpatient experience preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Completion of required credentialing, background screening, and orientation.
