Certifications: Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT), Basic Life Support (BLS) Must-Have: - Respiratory Therapy - Patient Education - Patient Care - Life Support - Care Planning Description: The Respiratory Therapist RRT provides advanced-level respiratory care to patients. The care is designed to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control deficiencies and/or abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system. This position acts as a resource to the CRT staff. The RRT may be responsible for special clinical projects or assignments as designated by leadership according to the needs of the department. The therapist performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol. They obtain arterial gases and oversee the operation of equipment for optimal patient care. They initiate Respiratory Protocol according to department criteria. Interventions are initiated based on the interpretation of assessments. Medications are administered in a timely and safe manner. The effect of the medications is evaluated and re-evaluated appropriately according to protocol. The therapist ensures that the progress of patients is communicated to staff, physicians, and other departments. They maintain awareness of assigned patients' overall conditions. They communicate and share patient information with physicians and nurses. The therapist makes appropriate recommendations for patient care. They recognize the educational needs of patients and families in relation to health promotion and wellness. Patients and families are taught self-care techniques and modalities. Documentation is completed according to departmental standards. Productivity information is accurately documented. The therapist monitors supplies and equipment and notifies the appropriate person when supplies are low or broken. They utilize time effectively to achieve productivity standards, including utilizing low census time appropriately. Participation in quality and patient safety initiatives is essential. Potential areas for improvement are identified by the therapist, including processes that could be streamlined or revised to improve patient satisfaction. Potential safety hazards that may create problems for patients and/or staff are recognized and appropriate actions are taken. Participation in departmental meetings is required, contributing ideas or feedback. The profession of Respiratory Care is promoted, and the therapist acts as a resource, consultant, and mentor within the department. Quality improvement and research activities are part of the Respiratory Care Team’s responsibilities to guide the development of standards of patient care. The therapist may be required to float to other departments based on business needs. On-call status during a regularly scheduled shift may be required. Other duties as assigned are performed as necessary.
