Registered Respiratory Therapist - Neonatal Intensive Care - (RRT - NICU)

This temporary pediatric Registered Respiratory Therapist opportunity is based in Durham, North Carolina, a dynamic and growing city in the heart of the Research Triangle. In this pediatric RRT role, you will provide comprehensive respiratory care to infants, children, and adolescents across inpatient pediatric units and potentially emergency and intensive care settings. A typical day may involve performing respiratory assessments, managing ventilators, administering aerosolized medications, performing chest physiotherapy, and responding to respiratory emergencies. You will collaborate closely with pediatricians, neonatologists, intensivists, nurses, and other allied health professionals to support safe and effective respiratory management tailored to each child’s needs.
Responsibilities may include: Conducting detailed respiratory assessments and documenting findings in the electronic medical record Setting up, monitoring, and adjusting mechanical ventilators and non-invasive ventilation equipment for pediatric and neonatal patients Administering bronchodilators and other respiratory medications via appropriate delivery devices Performing airway clearance techniques and providing suctioning and support for patients with compromised airways Responding to rapid responses and pediatric codes as part of the emergency response team Supporting care in units such as general pediatrics, pediatric ICU, neonatal ICU, and the emergency department, depending on clinical needs Educating patients’ families on respiratory therapies, equipment use, and home care considerations when appropriate Collaborating with physicians and nursing staff to develop and adjust patient care plans based on clinical progress
Patient acuity is typically moderate to high, with caseloads that may include preterm infants, children with chronic respiratory conditions, postoperative patients, and those with complex medical needs requiring close respiratory monitoring. Patient ratios and bed assignments are structured to support safe practice and allow for thorough assessments and interventions. Shifts and specific hours will be confirmed during the interview process, with expectations that you are able to meet the facility’s scheduling needs across the 13-week assignment.
