Respiratory Therapist, Senior
Job Summary
Under the direction of department management, the Respiratory Therapist, Senior demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge in respiratory care and assigned patient care areas, following all policies and procedures as defined in the Department Policy and Procedure Manuals.
Job Responsibilities
- Administers competent care of patients through airway management, mechanical ventilator management, oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, and respiratory care procedures and treatments to assess, prevent, stabilize, or remedy patients' respiratory dysfunction.
- Provides standard Respiratory Care including aerosol medication delivery, basic bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, and arterial punctures.
- Ensures airway management, including aspiration of established airways, tracheostomy care, tube changes, endotracheal intubations, and extubations. May perform Pulmonary Function Testing as required.
- When working with transportation services, may transport pediatric and neonatal patients from referral hospitals according to established protocols.
- Performs advanced respiratory care procedures per established protocols, which may include UAC, UVC, IV insertion, chest tube insertion, needle decompression, ABGs, and blood glucose monitoring as dictated by medical control.
- May be involved in managing extracorporeal circulation for cardiac and respiratory support of patients.
- May be required to be on-call for various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Responsible for all aspects of ventilator care, including setup, function verification using specialized ventilator modes, monitoring, and implementing appropriate weaning techniques.
- Maintains and enhances job knowledge and skills, functions independently with minimal supervision, and serves as a resource to other staff based on experience level.
Required Skills & Experience
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical information and technical procedures.
- Strong documentation skills for clinical information.
- Effective communication skills to convey information and respond to inquiries from patients, physicians, family members, and team members.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Reasoning Ability: Capability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical situations.
Required Education
- Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
Required Certifications & Licensure
- Current certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
- Depending on practice area, all staff must have at least one of the following certifications: ACLS, NRP, PALS, CPFT, or an advanced practice certificate to administer moderate sedation in a bronchoscopy lab. All certifications must be maintained as required by their respective certifying bodies.
Schedule Notes
Must have at least two years of experience working with pediatric, NICU, or PICU populations in a hospital setting with familiarity in relevant systems.
