Overview

The Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) position plays a critical role in providing exceptional care to patients in a fast-paced environment. This unit focuses on a variety of patient diagnoses and requires a strong team-oriented approach along with effective communication skills.

Unit Details

• Unit Type: Stepdown
• Number of Beds: 22
• Nurse-Patient Ratios: 1:04
• Common Diagnoses: Heart failure, Atrial fibrillation (Afib), respiratory distress, stroke
• Patient Care Technicians: 1:10 ratio

Shift Information

• Shift Length: 12 hours
• Shift Requirements: Every other weekend, 1 major holiday and 1 minor holiday per year
• Self-Scheduling: Cyclic scheduling

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care, including medication administration, patient education, and monitoring of vital signs
• Assess and document patients’ conditions, ensuring timely and appropriate interventions
• Titrate intravenous drips as per protocol with knowledge of medications such as Cardizem, amiodarone, and nitroglycerin
• Read and interpret telemetry strips
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care

Qualifications

• Years of Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a related nursing role
• Required Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Additional Information

• New hires will complete a brief orientation, including a pass/fail exam based on skills learned, requiring a minimum 90% score to ensure competency.
• Floating to the ICU is required if the nurse has appropriate experience.
