Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

Position available in the Float Pool, encompassing diverse areas within the hospital, including PCU, Telemetry, MedSurg, and ER Holding. The traveler may also float to a nearby facility for patient care within their scope of practice.

Experience Requirements

Minimum of 1 year of experience is required. First-time travelers are welcome with strong backgrounds in PCU/Telemetry and previous float pool experience.

Common Patient Types and Diagnoses

  • Neuro, Trauma, Surgical, Medical
  • Respiratory compromise, Sepsis, Renal failure
  • Bleeding disorders, General medical and surgical cases
  • CHF, COPD, Pneumonia, Ortho, Strokes
  • CCU patients including post CABG/TAVRs, STEMIs, and pacemakers

Patient Ratios

  • PCU: 1:4
  • MedSurg: 1:5-6

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS

Skills Required

  • IV Medication Titration
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Bipap management
  • Ostomy and general drain management
  • Tracheostomy and chest tube care
  • Experience with lumbar drains and TR Bands (preferred)
  • Familiarity with EMR systems, specifically EPIC

Support Within the Department

Support staff includes Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), Charge Registered Nurses without patient assignments, and Hospitalists available 24/7, along with Respiratory Therapists and specialty physicians on call around the clock.

Technology and Equipment

  • Electronic Medical Record: EPIC (required)
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing system: Pyxis

Orientation

  • 1-day general hospital orientation
  • 1 day of unit orientation (12 hours) in the PCU unit
  • 1 day of light unit orientation

Scheduling and Expectations

Weekend rotation is required every other weekend, with potential for rare back-to-back weekends. Requests for time off (RTO) should not exceed 5 days. Shifts will be scheduled in 3-week increments, and travelers will receive their schedules 7-10 days prior to the start date. There is no self-scheduling, nor any guarantee of a patterned schedule.

Additional Notes

Staff attire consists of any solid color scrubs while maintaining a professional appearance. Free parking is available in the parking garage. Staff are expected to fill out whiteboards, perform and document hourly rounding, and provide bedside reports. Proper medication management protocols must be followed, including safe disposal practices and pain management documentation.
