Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU position requiring ventilator care experience and a VA or compact RN license.

Details

  • Work in the Surgical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) of a large acute care hospital
  • Functions as a stepdown unit from the General Surgical ICU, with a bariatric specialty and backup coverage for the trauma unit
  • Includes 2 beds dedicated to chronic trach patients requiring non-ICU level care
  • Typical patient ratio is 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4
  • Uses ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach care supplies, endo tools, PICC lines, and MML
  • Manages IV drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine
  • Remote telemetry monitoring with monitors remaining on the unit and tele-sitting support from Patient Care Techs
  • Night shift schedule of 4x12 hours from 6:45pm to 7:15am
  • Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block

  • Floating required within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
  • EPIC charting experience required

Requirements

  • Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required; single-state license from a non-compact state may be considered pending
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Previous charge nurse experience preferred
  • Experience with cardiac monitoring, emergency response, and dysrhythmia interpretation/management
  • Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
  • Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients required
  • Experience managing cardiac drip medications (no titration required)
  • Experience with respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP
  • Experience with Rapid Response and Code team activation
  • Experience with isolation precautions and PPE
  • EPIC charting system experience required

Additional Information

  • Provide advanced nursing care to surgical stepdown patients including bariatric and trauma backup cases
  • Participate in Rapid Response and Code team activations as needed
  • Facility is a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, and a teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
  • Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
