Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring a NE or compact license and prior stepdown/telemetry experience.

Details

  • Level 2 trauma acute care hospital setting within the Progressive Care Unit (Stepdown)
  • 40-bed unit with an average daily census of 24
  • Patient ratios of 1:4-5 both days and nights
  • Cares for adult cardiac med/surg, dialysis, oncology, vascular, sepsis, respiratory, stroke, post-stent, post-pacer, and renal failure patients
  • RNs required to titrate drips including Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and insulin
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes an assignment
  • Nurse aides/patient care techs available at a 1:12 ratio
  • High flow respiratory therapy equipment used on the unit
  • RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry strips
  • Uses EPIC EMR
  • 12-hour night shifts, 0630-1830 and 1830-0630
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required to MedSurg or ICU to take PCU-acuity patients
  • On-call staff must arrive within 30 minutes if called back in

Requirements

  • Active NE or Compact RN license required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Competency in arterial lines required
  • Must be able to perform overhead and portable patient lifts
  • Driver's license required for submission and used to verify residency
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, including employment dates and rehire eligibility

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care for a diverse stepdown population, including Hispanic and Somali patients
  • Use vein finders, bladder scanners, and lift equipment as part of daily care
  • Focus on patient experience scores, responsiveness, and communication regarding medications
  • Navy blue scrub color required
  • Artificial fingernails are prohibited in all patient care areas
  • One day of unit-specific orientation provided
  • Pass/fail open-book skills exam given during orientation, requiring a 90% passing score
  • Minimum of 2 holidays falling within the contract period must be covered
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be requested upfront; no additional RTO approved after submission
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility, verified by driver's license
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and strong communication skills are key to success on this unit
