Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit Information

This unit has a total of 56 beds and provides care primarily for adults with a range of medical diagnoses, including but not limited to:

  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF)
  • Hepatitis
  • End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD)
  • Diabetes Mellitus (DM)
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Pneumonia
  • Sepsis
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) bleed
  • Syncope
  • Chest pain
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Respiratory failure
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Arrhythmias
  • Seizure disorders
  • Overdose
  • Delirium tremors

Patient Ratios

The staffing ratios are as follows:

  • Registered Nurse:
    • PCU/Telemetry: 1:4 (Days & Nights)
    • Medical/Surgical: 1:5 (Days & Nights)
  • Certified Nursing Assistant: 1:8 (Days & Nights)

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse will be expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Cardiac and vasoactive drip titration
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV starts and blood product administration
  • CIWA, drain/tube management
  • Insertion and management of indwelling and straight catheters
  • Management of insulin drips (both DKA and non-DKA)
  • Continuous bladder irrigation
  • Chest tube maintenance
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Thorough physical assessments
  • Strong clinical judgment and professional bedside manner
  • Collaboration as a strong team player
  • Adaptability and a positive attitude

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of acute care experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Nursing education program completion approved by a board of nursing
  • Ability to float to other units, including ICU, if qualified

Support on the Unit

The unit provides support from various healthcare professionals, including:

  • CNA (1:8 ratio both Days & Nights)
  • Charge nurse: 2 for the unit, available 24/7
  • Phlebotomy support available for peripheral blood draws only
  • Resource Nurse available based on staffing
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • Hospitalist available 24/7 in-house
  • Centralized Tele Monitoring available 24/7

Charting System

The electronic health record system utilized is Epic. Familiarity with this system is preferred, and training may be provided if needed.

Orientation

New employees will undergo a comprehensive orientation program, which includes:

  • 2 days of in-class/online education
  • 2 shifts (12-hour) with a preceptor

Scheduling

Scheduling details include:

  • Every other weekend rotation (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
  • Holiday coverage requirements are every other holiday during the contracted timeframe
  • Approval for time off up to 7 days required
