Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Progressive Care Unit position requiring 2+ years of experience and a NC or compact RN license.

Details

  • PCU unit caring for mixed-acuity PCU and MS/Tele patients
  • Patient ratios of 1:4-5, with occasional 1:6 in extreme situations
  • Patient population includes COPD, pneumonia, respiratory distress, COVID-19, flu, and PE cases
  • Unit houses chronic trach/vent patients, with no nurse assigned more than one vent patient at a time
  • 48-bed unit with CNA ratios of 9-10:1
  • Night shift schedule, 12-hour shifts from 18:45-07:15
  • Every other weekend required
  • Float requirement to like units
  • Uses Pyxis, Epic, and SBAR charting systems
  • Equipment includes chest tubes, vents, trachs, BiPAP/CPAP, and drips such as Dopamine, Cardizem, and Heparin
  • 36 or 48 hours per week may be offered
  • 13-26 week assignment lengths accepted
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated based on unit needs

Requirements

  • Active RN license (NC or Compact) required
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required; NIHSS preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in high-acuity Med-Surg with occasional PCU patients required
  • Experience with 1:6 ratios within the last 5 years required
  • Epic charting experience preferred
  • Skills required include IV starts, vent management, telemetry monitoring, CPAP/BiPAP management, and interpretation/management of dysrhythmias
  • Experience with chest tube management, tracheostomy care, and cardiac/vasoactive drip titration preferred
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Two professional references from a supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending references OK at submission)

  • Unit provides strong support resources including a team lead rounding at 3:1, two respiratory therapists, an assistant nurse manager on all shifts, an admission/discharge nurse, vascular access team, RRT, code team, and behavioral health team
  • Unit orientation is 24 hours, with weekly orientation scheduling
  • Scrubs not provided; white or navy blue required
  • Pre-start modules required (8-10 hours for acute care roles), completed online and annually
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates accepted at a reduced rate within 50 miles of the facility
  • Previous Novant Health or New Hanover PERM/PRN/EP employees must wait 12 months before applying and disclose employment history for facility approval
  • Current travel per diem clinicians must choose between per diem or travel status, not both
  • RTO up to 7 days can be auto-approved if it does not fall on a holiday; no RTO allowed during the first week of assignment
  • Must work 2 of 3 major holidays
  • Travel pairs allowed if on different units with separate transportation and schedules disclosed
