Registered Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Unit Information

Location: Denver, CO

Floor: 5A

Number of Beds: 34 (department is physically split between 5th and 6th floors)

Staff Count: Approximately 45

Patient Ratios: 1:3-4 (may flex to 1:5 for Med/Surg overflow)

Traveler will be expected to manage ratios of 1:5 to 1:6.

General Information

Unit specializes in Surgical Transplant care. The night shift comprises charge RNs without patient assignments, staff nurses, and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs).

  • Mobilabs for lab specimen labeling
  • EKG machine
  • AccuVein
  • Virtual Sitter Cameras
  • Workstations on Wheels (W.O.Ws)
  • Hoyer Lift, Sara Steady Lift, Sit to Stand Lift
  • Cortrak Machine for Dobhoff tubes
  • Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Intravenous (PIV) Machine

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) System: Meditech

Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year of acute care hospital Stepdown/PCU experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Solid Organ Transplant (kidney, liver, or pancreas)
  • Experience with higher oxygen delivery modalities (Vapotherm/BiPAP/CPAP)
  • Knowledge of chest tube management and care
  • Tracheostomy management and care
  • NG/Dobhoff tube placement and management
  • Experience in managing DKA patients and insulin drips
  • Strong critical thinking skills, particularly in identifying decompensating patients (e.g., sepsis)

Typical Procedures

  • Wound and drain care for a large surgical population
  • Frequent lab draws from central lines
  • Transfusion of blood products
  • Application of two-point soft physical restraints
  • Utilization of NICOM for non-invasive cardiac monitoring
  • Continuous Bladder Irrigation (CBI)
  • Plasmapheresis (in partnership with HD/infusion nurses)
  • Caring for patients on Heparin gtts, PCAs, Epidurals, and anti-arrhythmic drips
  • Central line usage and care
  • Reading telemetry strips
  • Strong infection prevention practices, particularly for immunocompromised patients
